There are video/audio recording devices that will detect the start-stop signal that is output from the EX1R’s SDI port, but these are probably more money than you’re willing to spend just to have video/audio sync. FOr slo-mo I would simply buy something like you’ve already mentioned and just push the 2 record buttons at the same time. In post you can slide the extra audio around in your NLE to get what you want.

Perhaps you’d better provide a few more details then, only because some versions of XDCAM Transfer won’t work or are very flakey with some newer versions of the Mac OS.
And we’re taking about the original XDCAM Transfer program, right? Not the XDCAM Browser or the original CLip Browser software.

James, this is a really long shot but do you have one of the EX3’s programmable buttons set up to “delete last clip” and activated it by mistake? Twice?
As it has already been pointed out, it’s very unusual for a clip to disappear and I’ve never had this happen to me. I’ve seen a corrupt clip (once) but that’s it.

Trash the preference file for XDCAM Transfer. Once you’ve done that restart the program and it will default to the basic layout and you’ll get your window back.
The path to that preference file is: Macintosh HD>users>yourname>library>preferences>com.sony.XDCAMBrowser.plist

With that in mind, when I’m explaining such things to people with less experience I’ll go the extra step by using Mb (Mbit) and MB (Mbyte) at the same time.

I usually remove all doubt and use the terms Mbit or Mbyte, as most people unfamiliar with or unwilling to learn the differences don’t know the subtleties of Mb or MB. Personally, I think it looks more like a typo than anything else.

Editing XDCAM EX natively is certainly an acceptable practice if that’s the only format you’re editing with. You however, are in a different situation. There’s no reason to exchange highly compressed (and lossy) H.264 clips with another format (MPEG2) which is also highly compressed. This is just asking for a step down in quality because of a possible generational loss.
In this case I would create a ProRes sequence, drag both formats in, do your edit then export using current settings, which would be a ProRes movie.

It doesn’t sound like a mistake on your part. It does, however, sound like a mistake on the part of the shooter. If channel 2 sounds like an on-camera mic recording then that’s probably how it was recorded. Person one had a lav and person 2 did not. I record interviews all the time and 2 lavs for 2 interviewees is the only way it makes sense.

Because there are a number of limitations and disadvantages that makes exFAT unsuitable for widespread use at this time. Just have a look at all the issues with using exFAT in the same Wiki article. The biggest ones are that support is non-existent with anything other than the most recent operating systems as well as not being adopted by any of the flash drive manufacturers. Even Vista can’t read exFAT without a service pack plug in.
Remember that Sony SxS memory is formatted with FAT32 for a reason. If exFAT was a common format it would most likely be in widespread use because of the absence of a file size restriction.
