In addition to your Power Mac G5 you’ll need to upgrade your FCP to version 6.0.2 and Quicktime to version 7.3 or better. The Mac OS needs to be version 10.4.11 or better.
You’ll need the Sony Transfer Tool software. You’ll also need the Sony FAM software driver software so your G5 will recognize your EX1 (or more specifically the onboard SxS Pro memory card) when you connect via USB. The Sony stuff is all free.
You can also get the free Sony Clip Browser Software but it only works on Intel Macs and it’s not really necessary for your purposes.
Oh, and you’ll need an EX1. Now you’re good to go.

Most likely because of the data rate limitation of recording to the SxS Pro Cards.

Thanks for posting back, Jim. Noticing on your part that there is more than one “version” of FCP 6.0.2 is very interesting. I’ve never heard of that before. Sometimes upgrading to the latest version of FCP doesn’t automatically mean that the rest of the pro apps will update as well. Certain programs need other programs to be upgraded before things become fully functional. For example, there are recent versions of the Pro Apps Updater software that won’t be available to you until you have a certain OS version, QT version etc. Then the latest Pro Apps updater will appear and allow you to update to even newer versions of your existing software. It’s all very confusing sometimes.

In addition to having FCP 6.0.2 make sure you’re also running at least OS 10.4.11 and Quicktime 7.3 for all this to work properly.
Re: your post in the FCP forum, the XDCAM EX codecs will be at the very bottom in the sequence presets list right below the ones for XDCAM HD. There are a number of them that cover the various EX shooting modes. If the presets are missing then something isn’t installed right or you’re missing an update somewhere.
When you connect your camera via USB or plug an SxS Pro card into the Macbook Pro’s Express 34 slot does a device icon show up on the desktop?

From what I can gather from scouring the ‘net even cameras with the most recent serial numbers are exhibiting the issue. I’d suggest phoning your broadcast supplier and asking their advice. You can, of course, phone Sony directly and they’ll also advise you on what your options are.
I don’t know about the success rate with regard to the BF issue being fixed properly by Sony the first time around but I do know of several EX owners who sent their cameras in for the vignetting issue and it came back to them in worse shape than it was when they sent it in. This isn’t the case with all vignetting adjustments of course, but there are some.
So right now it seems to be a crap shoot. You can ask for a replacement camera and it may or may not be better than what you have now. If I was in your shoes I’d be phoning Sony and asking them some questions.

Nothing that I’m aware of at the moment. In order for this to work you’d need software on the drive to recognize that it’s connected to the camera (like a Firestore drive) and then be able to slave itself to the camera for commands like start/stop recording, etc. The EX itself is not capable of controlling a hard drive (yet).
