Sony PMW 1 EX-1 XDCAM and a HDD
Posted by Robert Bryant on March 23, 2008 at 4:52 amI am looking into purchasing the PMW 1 EX-1 XDCAM and I had a question…
Is it possible for me to bypass the need for an SxS card by hooking a portable HDD via USB to the camera and just save the footage to the HDD. It would seriously cut down on cost to rock a 160gb portable on my hip for $100 rather than an 8gb card for $500

March 23, 2008 at 5:40 amNothing that I’m aware of at the moment. In order for this to work you’d need software on the drive to recognize that it’s connected to the camera (like a Firestore drive) and then be able to slave itself to the camera for commands like start/stop recording, etc. The EX itself is not capable of controlling a hard drive (yet).

March 23, 2008 at 6:05 amhmmm, any ideas on a mac friendly software program that might be able to mimic the commands.
I am not familiar with firestone drives, is that a brand or a specific kind of HDD?

March 23, 2008 at 2:37 pmSony has said that you can use their hard drive recorder DR-60 to firewire but ONLY FOR HDV data rate. I suspect this would work with Firestore too.
There is nothing (yet) that would record XDCAM data rate. That doesn’t come out of either firewire/iLink or USB while recording. I believe there may be a device that will take the HD-SDI out to a flash card (forget the name) but I understand it would cost nearly as much as the camera.

You may be talking about the ” Flash XDR” from Convergent Design.
They have a forum here in the Cow.
5.000 US$ or so. But is the only way to record the 422 10b Uncompress from your EX-1 without having a full equipped Mac near your leg. It works with Flash cards that are much cheaper than the SxS.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

It’s a brand but it’s for FW only, not USB.
