We probably won’t be needing to author our first Blu-Ray disc until the fall so I’ve been holding off going with the Encore-Toast route in hopes that Apple came out with something in the meantime. The reason I was whining about wishing Apple had something by now was so I could have everything in place for testing and workflow ideas. I’m totally ignorant about the Blu-Ray process and wanted time to learn. Heck, I don’t even know what is needed just to encode a movie for a Blu-Ray destination.
By the time the fall rolls around I hope to be much more fluent in Blu-Ray stuff than I am now.

Bernd, you have to use the Sony Transfer Tool to transfer the clips from the BPAV folder to another location on your hard drive. In the process of transferring, the .mp4 EX files will be turned into QT .mov files which is what FCP uses.

Since you want the price to be reasonable then your only option would be a Matrox MXO and Apple 23″ Cinema HD display. I don’t think the Apple 30″ is on the Matrox list of supported Monitors. Yet. There’s just been an MXO hardware update so the 30″ may now be supported.
In case you’re not aware, the Matrox MXO allows Apple users to colour grade on, among others, a 23″ Cinema display.

For myself, my main monitor is an Apple 30″ and secondary is the 23″.

No, not really. I have limited comparison experience but my EX records better (less noisy) blacks than any of my MiniDV cameras (PD170, XL2 etc.). You’ve probably checked the following already but make sure you don’t have the picture gain set on auto, otherwise the camera will crank the gain up without your “permission” as it were. More gain means more noise. Also check to make sure that any picture profile settings you’ve tried hasn’t resulted in lightening up the blacks to get more detail. This will also increase picture noise to some degree in those areas.
For the least amount of picture noise shoot with a gain setting of -3 (minus 3). To quickly return to the default settings there’s a reset in the camera menu if you want to try that.

Yeah but…….but what about Blu-Ray? (blubbering incoherently). I need that NOW. I don’t want to resort to Adobe Encore, which means buy the whole CS3 thingy just to burn a BD-R. Sakes.

Don’t hold your breath for this one. The rolling shutter phenomenon is a CMOS thing and certainly not restricted to the EX. Even the RED ONE camera has rolling shutter.

Transferring clips recorded at the HQ 1080 35 Mbit per sec. setting is the only format I’ve EVER used and it’s ALWAYS worked, so I don’t know where Mike has been getting his research info but it’s NOT accurate. And of course, I’m using FCP 6.0.2, QT 7.3.1 and OS 10.4.11.
I suspect that the fixing of Sarah’s other computer problem may have been a factor in resolving her issue and not so much a FCP thing. In addition, the article link in Sarah’s recent post (the one that her computer person was referencing) was published on Sept. 1st 2007, which was long before the EX and FCP 6.0.2 was even shipping.

Avoid using higher picture gain settings during low light shooting. That’s probably what’s causing the noisy picture. Checking for fine detail issues using the camera’s LCD is not a good practice because there’s not enough resolution. You need to use a good quality monitor while you shoot. Your computer monitor should provide a more accurate picture.
