Go to the System Preferences icon in the dock and click on the Spotlight icon. Choose the Privacy pane and drag your media drive icons from the desktop into the privacy window.

Make sure Spotlight isn’t trying to search or index your media drives while you’re using them. You can drag your drive icons into Spotlight’s privacy window so it leaves them alone. Just a thought.

Nick is correct. The EX firewire port is for HDV only. Sony’s thought is that you can connect an HDV deck or camera via FW and record to that while also recording to the SxS Pro cards. If you want to record to an external device using the HQ 35 VBR setting you’ll have to use the SDI port.

The XDCAM EX codec resides within the NLE and not the Sony Transfer app. You could definitely import the MP4 files and the Sony app will convert them to MOV files but you wouldn’t be able to see anything. The Quicktime .mov format is not a single codec. There are, in fact, many different codecs or .mov versions, if you will, that allow the picture from different cameras to be used on the Mac. Programs like the most recent Final Cut Pro versions come with the XDCAM EX codec “built in” and having THAT codec on the Mac is what makes everything work.
I’m not at all knowledgeable about codecs and how they interact with the various programs. People like Craig Seeman, who is much more capable than I in these matters has suggested that a program like the freeware VLC player can be used to view your EX clips without having to go out and buy Final Cut Studio 2 or Premiere Pro, etc. However, the VLC player shows the picture but there’s no audio.
There’s really no cheap solution for you while you wait for the Media 100 developers to release an update.

You need to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 because you need Final Cut 6.0.2 minimum for editing EX footage. Other minimum requirements is OS 10.4.11 and Quicktime 7.3.1. You didn’t mention what flavour of G5 you’re running but others have been using 2.0 Ghz dual processor G5 machines without issue although the video playback might be a bit jerky at times.
You need to install Sony’s Transfer Tool Software and the companion FAM driver so your G5 will recognize the camera when you connect it. That’s all freebie stuff. Don’t bother with Sony’s Clip Browser software because it’s Intel only. You don’t really need it anyway unless you’re trying to archive your footage to DVD-R and then you use the Clip Browser software to split the clips up so they fit onto the media.

I heard that SanDisk has always made the cards for Sony. Take this as just a rumor. I don’t know for sure. Personally, I’m not going to buy any more cards until the 32’s come out. Might drop the price of the 16’s when they do.

Maybe you’ll be able to access the shooting mode through the EX3’s direct menu. It would be nice to have this feature on the EX1. Perhaps a future firmware update?
