  • FCP 5.1.4 beach ball on playback

Posted by Paolo Mugnaini on June 17, 2008 at 11:14 pm

Hi I am cutting a documentary, the files are on 3 1tb external HDs- it’s been working fine but now when I open the project and playback on timeline I get the beach ball for about 10secs then it plays-it won’t let me scroll- I have tossed out the prefs- I have run disk warrior on the HDs- I have tried to restart- still it keeps on doing it.
Does anyone have any suggestions please?
    thanks

    Paolo

How much space is left on the drives? If you have less than 100GB’s on a 1TB drive you’re running your drive in the RED. Also, where are you rendering to? you may need to lose some of your older render files to free up some disk space.

    thanks,
I have 1tb for render only, the other 3 with material on it are a little over 50%-
I shut down, turned the HDs off, turned them on again, restarted the G5….and it was fine. I really do not know what it is….I also have an extra FW card so not to create a power vacuum.

    Thanks for your help!!

Make sure Spotlight isn’t trying to search or index your media drives while you’re using them. You can drag your drive icons into Spotlight’s privacy window so it leaves them alone. Just a thought.

Run DiskWarrior or TechTools in all your drivers.

[Paolo Mugnaini] “where’s the spotlight privacy window?”

Go to the System Preferences icon in the dock and click on the Spotlight icon. Choose the Privacy pane and drag your media drive icons from the desktop into the privacy window.
