Wow, that’s a really long time, Kathleen. Hopefully you’re not using your startup drive to store your media files because that’s a big no no. Always use an external drive for your media and it should be at least a firewire 800 drive.
There are many ways to down convert your HD stuff for an SD delivery but the experts will usually tell you to get into your delivery codec as soon as possible. So in your case it’s just a matter of creating a DV PAL Anamorphic sequence first and then dragging your HD footage into it. When FCP asks if you want to change the sequence settings to match your clip settings just say no. Make sure FCP is set to display using Dynamic RT and do your edit. Dynamic RT will allow you to have smoother unrendered playback without dropping frames and FCP will reduce the video quality during playback to make this happen. If you stop the playhead the picture will return to full resolution so you can see what the final output will actually look like.
Hope this helps.

If you go to the Red Eye website there’s a link to a review at Studio Daily. The reviewer’s overall opinion is that the Red Eye’s strength is being able to quickly get a zoomless wide shot by screwing on a W/A adapter that’s barely bigger than a filter.

The Red Eye was designed by a Canadian cameraman, so it has to be good. (g)

Now you’ve peaked my own curiosity. It’s been awhile since I had my EX connected to my 50″ plasma using composite but I don’t remember any glaring issues with playback or panning. But I was playing back 30p and not 24p. If it looks decent with the computer playing back the footage then you’ll have to trust that future EX recorded moves will also look good in the final product.
When I first started shooting progressive way back when with my XL2 I was rather disappointed with the EVF’s playback (stuttering frames on panning) but once edited it looked fine and I wouldn’t go back to shooting interlaced unless a client specifically requested it.
Chris, we just need to have others weigh in on this topic and share their experiences with using the EX hooked up to an external monitor during a shoot.

Okay. Well, I’ll be the first to admit that I haven’t used any sort of external monitoring during a shoot so I can’t offer any worthwhile suggestions. You’ve got the shutter set right: 1/60 sec. minimum for 30p and I’d suggest 1/48 sec. for 24p. I’m wondering if it’s the refresh rate of the external monitor. It may be the way the camera is outputting to the monitor, although there’s no adjustment there other than to simply activate the output from the camera menu.
I shoot 1080p 30 all the time and am quite pleased with the result. I’ve changed the subject title to attract more attention from our peers.

[Chris Babbitt] “Am I missing a setting somewhere?”
Hi Chris,
What’ve you been setting your shutter speed at?
Can you post a sample clip somehow?

[Scott Meredith] “any ideas how to clear this out? “
When you try to empty the trash are you getting any dialogue windows coming up telling you why the trash is not being emptied?

You can export an XML file of your project out of v.6.0.4 and open that file in v.5.1.4. An XML file is not the project file but is basically a text-based description of your edit. Some things that won’t translate over are codecs and features that didn’t exist when v5.1.4 was shipping. In addition, some transitions won’t carry over, either. But your basic edit will translate over just fine.

[Chris Babbitt] “t seems like a logical way to keep track during shooting, rather than time code, etc.”
I know. It would seem like a natural thing to be able to display. I was also thinking you could change the timecode portion of the display to the clip name instead but there’s only:
timecode
timecode – clock mode
user bits
clip duration – elapsed time from the beginning of the clipYou can’t even get the clip name from any of the status screens while in record mode. That’s the status button below the handle where you can cycle through all the status screens.

[Raymond Kujawa] “Are we suffering the quirks of new batteries? “
Probably not the batteries. Another poster here had the same issue and it turned out to be a camera problem. I’m pretty sure it was a contact alignment issue between the battery and camera.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think you’ll end up sending your problem camera to Sony Repair before this issue is resolved.

Paul, you’re in uncharted territory here because I think you’re the first person to post here that has actually received their EX3. The two camera case makers you mentioned are both very good. I know you can buy Pelican cases with big foam inserts that you can customize and dig out just the right amount of room for the camera plus accessories (if there’s room left over).
Good luck.
