6.0.4 to 5.1.4 compatibility
Is there a way to save a project or export a project in 6.0.4 so that it can be opened by 5.1.4?

You can export an XML file of your project out of v.6.0.4 and open that file in v.5.1.4. An XML file is not the project file but is basically a text-based description of your edit. Some things that won’t translate over are codecs and features that didn’t exist when v5.1.4 was shipping. In addition, some transitions won’t carry over, either. But your basic edit will translate over just fine.
