November 19, 2008 at 4:21 am in reply to: 720×480 to 320 width x ? , without black sidebars320×240 would be the down sized version if what you’re displaying is a 4:3 full screen aspect video without sidebars. If you’re trying to display a wide screen or 16:9 aspect then the correct numbers would be 320×180 pixels. Remember that 720×480 can be either 4:3 or 16:9 depending on whether or not it’s flagged as anamorphic. The square pixel version (for the web) of a 16:9 720×480 anamorphic video is 853×480.

Get yourself a firewire drive and the application called SuperDuper (available online). Clone your system drive to the FW drive with the program. Now you have another bootable startup drive with your previous version of FC Studio to go back to if you run into any problems with current projects. Now you can clean off your system drive and install the new FCS2.
There’s a free program available online to de-install Final Cut Studio, but I would suggest reformatting the system drive and re-install the OS and then FCS2.

Although some folks do it I would not recommend having FCS 1 and 2 on the same system drive, as the requirements of the two versions differ and work best with certain versions of the Mac OS, Quicktime, etc. If you’re editing XDCAM EX you need the following minimum requirements:
OS v.10.4.11
QT v.7.3.1
FCP v.6.0.2
XDCAM FAM driver (no version # available)
Sony Transfer Tool v.2.5.1
Clip Browser v.1.0 (not needed to edit but recommended to have)– Don

Use Compressor as a stand-alone app and cross convert the files to Pro Res HQ using the same format settings as the XDCAM files. Just do a couple of clips and see if FCP stabilizes using those for editing. If it doesn’t then we’ve solved one piece of the puzzle: it’s not the native XDCAM clips that are causing the instability.

You do have to have QT Player Pro to use Final Cut Pro. With older versions of FCP a QT player key was provided that unlocked the “Pro” feature of Quicktime Player. With newer versions of Final Cut Pro found in FC Studio 1 and 2 the upgrade is automatic once QT Player detects Final Cut Pro on your computer. Start QT Player and choose QT Preferences from the Quicktime Player menu. Under the registration tab it should say “Apple Pro Apps User” in the “registered to” box and “Automatic” in the Registration Code box.
Your other problem is that your version of FCP 5 (which was the version in FCS1) may not support the JVC codec for the JVC HD110. You can check this within FCP by choosing “easy setups” and looking for the various JVC codecs. If they’re not there then it’s time to upgrade. The important thing to remember here is that the various codecs to display all the different video formats reside with FCP and not QT Player.

In addition to Stephen’s advice my suggestion would be to continue shooting 1080×1440 60i with the EX to more closely match with your Z1U footage if you plan to intercut with the 2 cameras in the same project. Going by the subject matter you’re shooting in your statement above there should be no problem with using the EX in HDV mode which is called SP 1080i 60 in the EX menu.
As for green screen work my suggestion is to shoot in HQ 1080i 60 mode to take advantage of the increased frame resolution, then cross-convert to Pro Res HQ using Compressor as a stand-alone app. From there you could finish your comps and drop the EX Pro Res stuff into an HDV timeline along with your Z1U clips. Interlaced green screen work will look fine using the EX, providing you still need to match footage with the Z1U in an interlaced timeline. If you’re doing green screen and don’t plan to match it with another camera then by all means go with progressive. In the EX menu use the HQ 1080p 30 setting for that.
For really fast action stuff you’d want to use either HQ 720p 60 (that’s 60 complete progressive frames a second) or HQ 1080i 60 (60 interlaced frames a second) and adjust your shutter speed accordingly to allow for more or less motion blur. This last bit is an aesthetic choice, depending on the look you’re trying to achieve or what your client wants.

It is. The 700 uses 2/3” full HD Progressive CCD (Power HAD FX) – 2.2M pixels (1920 x 1080) RGB 3 CCD Sensors – Supports both 1080 and 720. This is why Sony recently announced a 24p optional software add on for the 700 for only $4500.00 USD. If the CCDs were not progressive they wouldn’t be able to offer true 30p and 24p recording.

Was it the eBox-M that you bought, Stephen? If so, did you buy your own drives or did you just have DAT Optics ship it with drives installed?
