Yes, if you copy the EX clips in their native state over to a Data DVD. EX clips have imbedded audio and TC.

Since we now know it’s something to do with your particular system couple here’s a few more things you could try starting in order of easiest and least expensive:

– copy the BPAV folder to different hard drive and try the import again.
– fix permissions on your startup drive using Apple’s Disk Utility
– If you don’t have a copy of DiskWarrior get it and rebuild the directory of the hard drive where your BPAV folder is residing. No FCP editor and heavy Mac user should be without this program, anyway.

The fact that you’re getting an import error may be because the directory of that particular hard drive is corrupt. These are all just guesses because as I said earlier, I’ve not run into this problem before.

I’m afraid I haven’t personally seen that error come up in all the times I’ve transferred EX clips. If you’ve copied the original BPAV folder over from the card to your hard drive and haven’t altered the contents of the folder in any way then it should work. If the clips are not importing without an error then there’s a corruption in one or more files within the BPAV folder, which is quite rare. Check to make sure that the memory card was a Sony SxS Pro card and not an unsupported 3rd party card.

Clip Browser 2 has the capability to re-create a BPAV folder from the EX-native .mp4 files. You might try that. Another way to trouble shoot this is to find colleague that’s also able to work with EX files and try out your BPAV folder on their system. If you get the same error then there’s something wrong with the BPAV folder. If it does work then there’s something amiss with your system.

Rest assured that the workflow to transfer EX files for use in FCP is one of the simplest and easiest tasks out of all the flash memory-based cameras available including Panasonic P2, so don’t get discouraged by this hiccup.

Formatting will erase any picture profiles or other info that is transferrable between another EX camera. In other words, formatting gets rid of everything. Deleting only the clips is self-explanatory.

An alternative would be to encode the EX files to QT H.264 and keep the native frame size. Then all the PC user has to have to view the clips is the free Quicktime Player for WIndows. I did this recently for a client and they were very happy with the H.264 quality. I’m not sure if Windows Media Player supports QT H.264. It means more time encoding, though.

Welcome to Creative COW. Can you actually view the EX clips in the Transfer Tool window? And play them back without issue? But when you highlight one of them and click “Import” you get the error you’ve described?

I’m not sure. When FCP conforms a new sequence to match your clip settings does the footage look like it’s playing back progressive in an interlaced timeline or does it look good? If it looks fine then just duplicate your easy setup and call the new one 1080p 25.

You also shouldn’t have to custom set the frame size. FCP already knows that if your footage is HQ 1080p 25 VBR it also knows your frame size is 1920×1080 sq. pixels. If you shot SQ 1080p25 CBR the frame size will be 1440×1080 anamorphic. Make sure you’re not trying to change an anamorphic frame size to a square pixel frame size.

edit update: I just thought of something else. Once FCP conforms a new sequence to match your clip settings go to the browser and in the field dominance column check that it’s set to “none” for that sequence. Then you’ll know for sure that you’re viewing progressive footage in a progressive timeline.
