Correct. XDCAM EX is a 35 Mbits per sec. stream which is just above the lowest common denominator of DV25 (DV NTSC) which, as the name suggests, runs at 25 Mbits per sec. According to Apple’s White Paper on ProRes 422 the data streams for normal quality is 145 Mbits sec. and HQ is @ 220. The white paper goes on to say that more often than not the actual data streams for ProRes will be about 10% lower than advertised.

The bug that causes smoothcam renders to be lost is a global thing and not restricted to editing XDCAM. I’m assuming that’s what you’re referring to about your troubles with the smoothcam filter.

Why does it have to be hardware related? Why no finger pointing to the different software combinations out there that are probably just as varied as the hardware combos? I’ve being using a Mac Pro and my EX1 for almost a year now and have never had one crash while editing, rendering or exporting native EX files. Ever. I can’t believe that the EX3 stuff would be any different since it’s the exact same camera internally.
For the record my software versions are probably way behind the rest of you and it would seem that this is probably a good thing.

Final Cut Pro v.6.0.2 and no Pro Apps updates or any other FCS 2 updates since that time.I can edit using internal SATA drives or external RAID. Doesn’t seem to matter.

Go to the top of the Canvas window where the 3 drop down menus are located. Click on the right one and put a check mark beside RGB instead of Alpha. You might have hit the keyboard shortcut for Alpha by mistake.

Thanks, Stephen. Yup, that’s the way I’ve always done it but this time instead of copying the 720p sequence into a DV NTSC Anamorphic timeline (where the P.A.R. got screwed up on those oevercranked clips) and then rendering/exporting I simply exported a self-contained DV NTSC Anamorphic .mov right from the 720p timeline. The resulting movie had no aspect ratio problems with those few clips. So it saved a bunch of time futzing around in the motion tab then copying/pasting attributes on to the other problem clips.

Using a tripod the controller mounts to the pan bar just in front of the grip and you operate the zoom rocker with the thumb of your right hand while you pan and tilt. This leaves your left hand free to adjust focus and iris. I use the Libec piece myself and find the zoom control to be quite accurate and repeatable. I use it either on a tripod or my shoulder brace with an EX1.
Trying to do operate your tripod mounted EX3 without a zoom controller will invite many visits to your local physiotherapy clinic, although your physiotherapist would probably appreciate the extra cash.

Because you’ve exported to a hard drive that’s probably not formatted in Mac OS Extended, so FCP is splitting your movie into 4 Gbyte chunks. If the media drive is formatted in FAT32 binary, which is the formatting that can be read by both Mac and Windows computers, The file size limit with FAT 32 is 4 Gbytes.
You might try dropping the number at the end of the filename and try to open one of the segments with QT Player. Otherwise reformat the drive you’re exporting to in Mac OS Extended and re-export your movie.
Although I never use anything but “Log and Capture” in FCP, I’ve heard that using “Capture Now” may also create the split files that you’re describing.

Well, I’m not ready to consign this to the cold case filing cabinet just yet. Roger this might be just a really long shot but do you have any 3rd party Quicktime components installed? the reason I’m asking is because several days ago another FCP/EX user was having real issues with the Sony Transfer Tool crashing/freezing etc. when trying to import EX media. Turns out that a 3rd party QT component was interfering with the EX codec component in FCP. Thanks to Aiden Finn for a very timely post and solution.
Roger, I know you’re not having import problems but perhaps a 3rd party QT component is causing issues with EX media and FCP. Wouldn’t hurt to check.
