Turn ON a Custom Preset. Edit that Custom Preset and adjust the following:
CORING: +8
NR 1: LOW
NR 2: OFF (If you are on a static shot on a tripod with not much movement in the frame, then set to LOW)Boost the Croma a bit too, so that you are getting a healthy color sample.
Feel free to activate Cinema Gamma with a Low Knee if you want a more film-like look. Set Blacks to STRETCH. Keep SETUP and PEDESTAL at 0 or possibly +1.
Keep the VIDEO GAIN to -6 or under if possible (use +12db if you absolutely must…)
Try decreasing shutter speed from 1/60sec to 1/30sec before boosting gain to +12db.
Be careful about using 1/24sec in 24F mode as you will see a lot of motion blur…Please do let us know if you have any other questions.

I’d suggest the XH A1 for your application. Mainly because of the smaller faster Auto-focus, wider angle (32.5mm) lens, handycam form factor.

Yes, you can capture your 24F footage via FireWire using the Easy Setup of “HDV 1080P 24”.
You will NOT have Real-Time Monitoring back through the camera over FireWire of your editing timeline (like you would if you were editing standard DV)… this is currently possible when editing in the HDV codec… you WILL be able to view the timeline back through the camera over FireWire by choosing “Print To Video” (which will require you to wait as FCP re-conforms the GOP)… you can also view big screen on the desktop by selecting the Digital Cinema Desktop Preview.Please do let us know if you have any other questions.

I think the AJA Kona LH will allow you to downconvert to Standard Def and output over Component BNC outputs.

You do not have Real-time Analog pass-through to the HDV camcorder when editing in native HDV codec (like you do when editing in standard def DV codec). AJA Kona or BMD offers a solution for this. Also, I think the Matrox MXO box does too.

When attempting to ingest Canon 24F footage into Final Cut Pro you must:
1) Use FCP 5.1.2 or higher
2) Use an “Easy Setup” of “HDV 1080P 24F”. (This will allow you to capture, edit and output at 23.98)– don

The batteries are compatible between the XL1, XL1s, XL2, XL H1, GL1, GL2 and the new XH A1/ G1 camcorders.
There is a lot of added value in the XH A1 camcorder due to its extensive feature set.
