Honestly, I’d suggest using the Canon 16X Manual/Servo XL lens instead of the lens you are currently using with your XL1.
Better yet, offload your older XL1 for the new XH A1. You will be quite pleased with the new “Instant AutoFocus” Technology of the XH camcorder 20X lens – it is super fast and quite accurate.

The HV10 can be used as a record deck as long as you are inputting 60i DV or 60i HDV over FireWire or inputting Analog NTSC Composite Video (DV only) via the Analog Input Adaptor cable. The Component interface is an output only, active only during playback.

Have you tried:
Set XL1 into Spotlight Mode, Set Gain to Auto, Set WB to Auto???You could also try TV Mode (Shutter Speed Priority), set Shutter Speed to 1/30 second (might want to activate Frame Mode if you drop below 1/60 second), Set Gain to Auto, Set WB to Auto

All you really have to do before you begin to panic is go to Google.com and do a keyword search such as “.vro to .vob” and you will get results that will lead you in the right direction.

I do remember shooting *60i* footage with a Sony Z1U and then playing back that footage in a Canon H1 successfully and vice-versa… it is the Canon 24F footage that is not compatible.
