  • “#1 I usally don’t nest Motion files.”

Do you not find that if you try to trim an embedded motion file…..

    1. It slows down FCP
    2. Sometimes it (often) even cause FCP to crash

  • A lot of goood points guys…. Thanks for the Shadow, Blur tip. That will help a lot.

Couple more things I was wondering.

    1. To avoid crashes within FCP when using motion files, do you guys nest them within their own sequences and render those before nesting them into your main clip?

    2. When you save a motion file that’s already within FCP, upon re-entry into FCP, does it ever say that your media is offline and makes you reconnect that same motion file?

    3. Does anyone know if there is a codec that has an alpha channel but will play back realtime when comped in FCP…. I heard something about some sort of Pixar codec that might have come out with tiger??????

  • Just in case people think it’s not working right because of my system….

I’m running a brand spanking new Duel 2ghz G5 with 2.5 gigs of ram and an upgraded 256mg graphics card. Not to mention the Linkedd Firewire 800 lacies….

You’de think I’de get SOME performance out of that.

What I know realize this comes from is the difference between tape and film editing.

For film guys, this makes sense, for tape guys it does not. Either way, I guess you just have to get used to it.

    Thanks for all the opinions.

  • Hold on now…. A little misunderstanding. I ‘DO’ want the changes to be reflected…. just not the length of the ‘MASTER’ sequence.

  • Frankly, I found MOTION to be my biggest disapointment from the Production Suite. Mind you, I did have fairly high expectations, but I wasn’t expecting a complete bomb.

    Reasons I hate it:

    1. The moment I have more than 5 layers, the whole thing bogs down.
    2. Going between menus (Inspector, Timeline, etc), is extremely choppy
    3. Causes repeated crashes within FCP
    4. ‘Real-Time’…. that’s’ a joke. I would consider AE to be more real time even though they don’t advertise it.
    5. Way more limited than AE in terms of features and control.

Somebody please tell me it’s just me and I will be more than happy to re-install it if I have to…. but for now, that’s my experience.

  • Yes, you’re right. I don’t want the changes to be reflected in the ‘MASTER’ sequence that has all the little sequences nested inside of it. Don’t get me wrong, I see the huge benefit of this feature as well. I just want a good workflow method to get around this when I don’t want those changes to be reflected in the MASTER.

For example, if I have a dessolve between one nested sequence and another and I want to make the dissolve longer. I would have to go into the nested sequence, make it a little bit longer, giving it the handles I need for the dissolve. Unfortunately, when I go back to the master, my whole timeline has been shifted, music sync and all.

I’ve used a number of systems to date, from Tape to Tape, to non linear, to high end compositing systems…. When you set an OUT point, that frame should not be recorded on.

I’m shocked to hear that’s how the avid and FCP do it. It makes no sense to me.

When you are navigating through your sequence, one of the most common methods is to use the ‘next cut’ shortcut (up arrow in this case). When trying to squeeze a clip between two clips, you should press up, go to the first frame of the clip you want to preserve, hit OUT, hit RECORD. It’s absurd to have to back off a frame at that point.

If avid does this, I wonder if FCp tried to match their technique. No other system I know of does this.

  • I have to admit. Motion sucks. The moment you throw more than 5 layers at it, it comes to a halt. And not to even mention the crashes once it’s embedded into a FCP sequence.

  • No. All uncompressed. I was just trying to add a motion text layer between nested segments.
