Logical contradiction was that if I am using davinci resolve I am not an online finisher. I actually just finished a short in resolve and it was pretty much online in the sense that I had not to wait for render to preview, (well I had to merry sound to it afterwards): conformed, overplayed titles, added grain, some minor editing for timing, and of course a grade. Did it because of the speed of final render compared with anything else I use (an adobe shop here).

unless you have a spectrometer (i1 pro for example whch you could use with i1Share (free) still works with correct DLLs in Windows7)) the gray card/dslr would be your best bet.
This would be very approximate though as the color temp in dslrs is not that precise.
There is an argument however that the bias light is not all that important as the monitor color temp, especially if following Charles Poynton recommendations for as dark as it gets ambiance plus up to 80-100 nits monitoring to preserve 2.4 gamma -
I agree with you in general, I do find it hilarious though that in the beginning you say it would be wrong to define one by the tool yet in the end you say unless you are running smoke/quantel/avid you are not a “finisher”

1. You can calibrate any monitor, (as a matter of fact I am sure dell has some presets like rec709 or srgb, which should get you close enough) you can also characterize or profile it. What you are talking about is profiling. In order to profile anything for Resolve output a LUT must be produced. Research dispcalgui.
2. LUT will affect both the preview window in gui and a monitor out output through a decklink card.
Do not use preview window in gui for color evaluation.

Of course in photoshop such techniques were originally used and are still popular because it was somewhat difficult adjust luminosity of the image independently. In resolve we have Y- controls.

Factually incorrect. 1080p and even smaller have been supported since v8.1

Perhaps a better, less divisive solution is to separate forum into “Resolve Technical” and “Resolve Creative/Workflow”. This would perhaps help to avoid certain nasty elitist attitude that some of the posters have towards the NOOBs.
