November 23, 2011 at 12:27 am in reply to: CBS broadcast; pre- and post-roll and also formatsI would assume from the pre-post roll request that that they are talking about a tape based dub of your submission. If you are delivering tape, it makes sense that they’d want pre and post roll with an uninterrupted timecode, so that the tape machines can perform the pre/post roll as they edit it into the tie reel. In a digital delivery, I dont know why they would need it, except that bars and tone are the most traditional way to set audio and video levels as its ingested, and a slate-title, length, format, production contact info, is an unquestionable way to identify the right spot, so it goes in the right place. Pre roll to me, means bars and tone for 10-30 seconds, a slate for 5-10 seconds, and post roll would be black.

Thanks for the fuel for my corporate retort. Just before I pulled up the thread again, I was sending a list of add ons that they had not considered-including 2 Boris sets, 2 Adobe packages and Sorenson Squeeze licenses. Also ‘in depth’ training costs for After Effects and Edius. Well over $5500 per system. I did not consider the audio software.
The biggest expense will be the loss of regular clients who rely on our extensive familiarity of the systems we work with, and many of which are big $ car dealers who need fast turnarounds, and no technical fumbles. I can virtually guarantee a loss of revenue for production during the “gray period”, and it wont be recovered. Even more importantly, the loss of ‘airtime’ revenue-when the station loses control of the production, we lose a key ingredient in the client/station relationship. Ive made this pitch, and will again, but it is not working. The typical response refers to “Total System Integration” between news, production, in/out servers. Which is BS. I dont need to be integrated with those systems as long as what I output looks good and gets on the air when it is supposed to.and yes, the Media 100 analogy is good-We upgraded from M100 for a reason. I’ll use that one.

Uh…yes, I work for Young Broadcasting. They want to replace my 2 older FCP 5 systems with Edius despite heavy resistance. I am, lets say “boiling”. My team creates tons of client advertising, and we’ve developed a good reputation in the area for having solid production from script to screen. We effort about 35% of our stuff from scratch and graphics. No shooting-just stills, running footage and a ton of Motion and Boris Red comps. This is my biggest fear about a change over. What are compositing advantages and limitations of Edius? What kind of encouragement can anyone offer to help me wake from this nightmare?

January 24, 2011 at 5:01 pm in reply to: P2 Card Import Problems: is there hope for this?I was having similar issues importing from Card reader (also attempted from the hd backup as well). The files would play in transfer window using fcp import p2 from both sources-card reader and hd backup. But a handful of clips would sshow as transferring, but would not show in the logging bin when complete.
In capture scratch they showed the clip name plus #FFFFF (0KB). ex. 0278OI-octane xcu logo#FFFFFFFF.
I tried repairing clips, and the card reader says “no repair clips” suggesting that they dont need repair..Solved-but looking for an explanation if there is one:
After some desperation, I right click the questionable clips in the FCP transfer window and reverted to “original metadata” and its allowing me to import them. Does anyone have an explanation for this?
As always thanks, Dixon

Thats a tough one without seeing the setting you will be in. Are you shooting the jars as part of the image? Then you will likely need to have some controlled light to capture the shape of the jars-probably the least you could get away with. If you have the ability to flag the light off the bugs themselves, but still have enough to reference the shapes of the jars it might work. The jars and uncontrolled light will likely give you some reflections issues to deal with. Id start by opening the iris up, keep it on manual, and then gradually lower the light until you get the best exposure on the bugs. Definitely keep the iris in manual no matter what you do, and adjust it as needed. If you keep it in auto, as the amount of light changes when the bugs start increasing light, your camera will want to adjust to keep it consistent, which will counter your goal of seeing them “light up”. Does that make sense?
Get your camera as close to the shot as possible and in its widest end of the zoom, even try macro. The less zooming in you do, the more light will pass through the lens.
If there is a slow shutter speed option on your camera (under 60, like 24 or 12) you could try that-it would allow more light to be captured in low light.
If you increase gain to get the image it will become grainy. If I was really serious about the shoot, Id try to borrow a DSLR to shoot HD with a really fast lens. They have much better results in low light than small HDV camcorders. Id love to see your results.Dixon Johnston

In many fonts and on a western/european keyboard, you can use “shift+option+n”. I just had a Pena super to create in Boris Title 3d. It didnt add the n the way Theo described, but I just put it on a line above it and adjusted baseline and kern to line up.
I found my solution here:
