I think part of the problem continues to be the way Avid organizes and makes available information. It might be helpful to look at a document called the “Installation Guide” The actual file name is: “Install_SWLicense.pdf” Unfortunately, I could not tell you how I found it. It is referenced in the 3.5 read me and some other places with no clues as to where to get it. I accidentally happened across it after looking for various things all over their website.
If you have a dongle, I would recommend keeping it active. Apparently though, dongles are dead once MC/Symphony 4 hits. If however, you hate dongles, validation/activation is available without it. Then just hang the dongle from your rear view mirror.
While I can understand that dongles might be a hassle, they can break, get lost or stolen, awkward on a portable in the field… I like the simplicity they bring in system maintenance or just moving licenses between systems. With software activation, reinstalling a system or restoring from a clone becomes a little more involved. I wonder how many times they let you screw up or how long it takes to get back up once a mistake is made?

[walter biscardi] “1080i is 29.97, not 59.94.”
then is 59.94i, 1080? Honesty. I’d like to hear positions on this.

This forum is really starting to make me feel old. You are fine at 486.
Standard definition video for North America is defined as having a vertical line rate of 525 with 486 of those being the active picture area.

Don’t do it.
Maybe if you record to something like this:

and just capture in Vegas. It might be easier to get a new editor.

Beta SP will be more prone to having accurate timecode and is likely to be made/played in a professional quality deck.
DV will be more prone to compression artifacts and is likely to be formatted incorrectly.
The real question is, what system, media quality, hardware would you use to make either? Will it then bet set up, operated properly?

Also, since at least OS X 10.4,Macintosh computers have been able to read NTFS basic drives, just not write.

You’re quite welcome. Don’t forget, I’m speculating here. I don’t know if these tapes are in fact Digital8. It is just a possibility.

I don’t know if you took a look at the link I supplied.
Digital8 was a way for Sony to entice the installed base of Hi8 users to buy a new camcorder. Digital8 uses the same transport and tape as Hi8 but uses it to record a DV signal on the tape. To fulfill the needed bandwidth, the tape runs at double speed. a 2 hour analog Hi8 tape holds 1 hour of DV compatible media. the camcorders and decks have Firewire and can be used just like any DV equipment. They also playback and digitize Hi8 and 8mm tapes.
Don’t know what it’s worth to you, $800?

When you say you get horizontal lines, is it literally just lines or is there some image in there? If you have absolutely no image, could it be possible the recordings are actually Digital8?
