Place sequence markers on the timeline in Premiere Pro by right-clicking the dark grey band in the timeline (or where the work-bar is) and selecting “next available numbered.” This will allow you to set markers that will become chapter markers in Encore.

To export an MPEG 2 from Premiere, go to File>Export>Adobe Media Encoder. There are a billion options in the Adobe Media Encoder, so a little research on what specs you’re looking to export to for your DVD will be helpful (you’ll want to start iwth MPEG2-DVD, unless you’re creating a VCD). The nice thing about exporting an MPEG2 from Premiere is that Encore won’t have to transcode it, so burning the DVD will be quick.

I used to cut a monthly, half-hour high-paced news program on Premiere 6.5 LE — yes, Limited Edition — which was the old-school Premiere answer to Elements. I was able to pull of a very professional looking project just using LE. Elements, from my understanding, is at least as capable as the old LE was, so for what you’re describing, I have no doubt that Elements would suffice. It is a little more complicated than many consumer-level applications, but it’s also more powerful than most consumer-level applications.

One other thing I’ve found is that the Macs we have here at work don’t much like DVD+R media. They only seem to work with DVD-R. Might be an issue for you?

There was a problem with the de-noiser filter — once I disabled it in a number of clips, the audio behaved exactly as I expected it to.

Anyone else have this problem before? I’ll be filing a bug report with Adobe, I suppose….

I just gave it a shot and it doesn’t appear so. It’s easy to import Premiere projects into AE, but apparently not the other way around, unless I’m missing something obvious. Did you post this inquiry in the Premiere Pro forum?

In the meantime, though, you might need to out-source the DVD. If it’s a one-off, you might try the dual layer DVD burner approach. If it’s a big batch, there’s the export the file to data-tape and send it off to a duplication house.

I’m not sure what you’d need to do this for, unless it’s to move the material into, say AfterEffects to put effects on each individual shot, and you don’t want to render out the untrimmed clips.

If that’s the case, you can import the Premiere project into AfterEffects as a project and the trims will be applied to the clips in the AE timeline.

If that’s not what you’re trying to do, I’m sorry, but I don’t have any ideas. Sorry!

Thanks to all for your suggestions. My thinking had been something like Sean had suggested, but I was afraid the reality would be what Joe said. And the movie needs to play smoothly, so brief pauses wouldn’t be appropriate. Bummer, though….
