Hi, thanks for your reply. I discovered that the problem is that I was in expanded edit mode. For some reason, it distorts the preview. Hitting ESC was all I needed to do.

  • Well, this is bizarre. When I try to import a batch of jpgs and select all, I’m getting an error that half the files are not found. When I click on each file individually, the Open Sequence checkbox is greyed out on every other file. What could that mean?

  • Thanks, that’s what I was hoping for!

Well, I think I’ve finally got this figured out. I followed the suggestion of doubling the size of the still image to 3240×2160. That alone didn’t solve the problem, but when I jacked the bitrate UP, the image quality was greatly improved. There’s still a hint of pixelation here and there, but it’s much better than it was.

I’ve recut the video using the dissolves and fades that I wanted to use originally. You can see the new version here: https://www.godtube.com/watch/?v=WWD6Y7NX

Here are the render settings that finally worked for me:

Q1] Where did you get the Stills from? I shot them with a D90 and converted the RAW files to .png (tried .jpgs first). Images are 1920×1080, 72 dpi

Q2] What Template are you rendering to? Slightly modified YouTube setting:

Q3] What is your Project Settings?

I completely agree! So what the heck is causing it and how do I fix it? 🙁

The issue is definitely related to fades, dissolves and pans over still images. I ended up taking out all the dissolves between the stills and left only one pan and one fade at the end. Most of the stills are much better. Here’s another render:

You can still see pixelating in the still image at 1:41, just before the next clip, which is a pan over a still. And it’s bad also at 1:56, where the still fades to black.

BTW, I’m running Windows 8. Has anyone reported any issue like this with this OS?

Hmmm, maybe this is a clue… the pixelation seems to be triggered by fades and crossfades.

I uploaded the video so you can take a look. The pixelated still images begin at 1:28.

Well, found the problem… It was in the “Should Have Been Obvious Department.” In case anyone else has the same problem, it was a matter of the Preview mixer not showing me the true output (still not sure why), and also the track volume being turned down too far on the video track.

I had created this video as a version of a previous project, and deleted the old video but pasted in the new clips without noticing that the volume slider was not set at the default 0 db.

Doh! On the other hand, it’s nice that it wasn’t something more complicated like a bad codec. 🙂
