    A couple of ways to do this:

    (1) Toggle Auto Ripple on with the Affected Tracks, Bus Tracks, Markers and Regions option. (Ctrl+L or Options > Auto Ripple)

    (2) If you need to move everything in every track in a project, change the Ripple option to All Tracks, Markers and Regions -or- you can Insert > Time, which is in the form of hh:mm:ss;ff (hours:minutes:seconds;frames).

    I would be willing to help you check to make sure SpeedStep is enabled: it almost certainly is, by default. Now that I think about it, I’m not so sure if it should be thought of as a speed booster or an efficiency tool: I think SpeedStep throttles the processor back when it’s not being exercised. That’s the older way. The latest processors (from the last year) have an automatic overclock thingee that would also be on by default, but I can’t remember if it’s called “SpeedStep” or if it has a new clever name.

    In most cases, you press the DEL key during boot to get into the BIOS. Once there, unfortunately, who knows what the BIOS programmers decided to call it. We can look it up if you can tell me (1) the motherboard manufacuter (Abit or ???) or (2) the BIOS manufacturer (Phoenix or ???) and (3) the processor.

    Can you give us a particular example?

    Different codecs support different sorts of things. Some have more options than other. Plus, the engineers at Sony Media Software choose what to reveal and what to hide with some codecs. And even then, some codecs support some things and not other, such as alpha channel (RGBA, RGB+, 32-bit color) transparency.

    Good point Bob, sorry if I wasn’t clear:

    I am definitely NOT recommending boosting voltages!

    Other than boosting voltages, BIOS settings are safe to tweak. Now, granted, many random tweaks will cause your computer to totally bomb and fail to boot, but I can’t think of anything other than voltages that will actually cause damage.

    Definitely enable it. SpeedStep just kicks the speed of the processor up dynamically when needed, and keeps the speed lower when it’s not for efficiency. For example, when posting on the Cow, your CPU can run at a lower speed, but when rendering in Vegas, the speed bumps up – often quite a bit faster. You can use a simple CPU monitoring utility and actually see it do this (one probably came with your motherboard software, SpeedFan, RealTemp, etc.).

    Incidentally, other than playing with voltages, you can safely tweak items in your BIOS if you want to play around and untweak them if your OS won’t boot or if the machine is unstable after.

    Sure. For Lagarith lossless, basically just set your output to match your source and select the codec in the Custom options (and save a Template) and you are done. So 1080i60 source would get 1920×1080@29.97, but with square pixels. The only setting you might occasionally monkey with (via the Config button) would be changing from “RGB” to “RGBA” for projects with transparent alpha backgrounds, but you can toggle “Mutlithread” on there too (I’ve never checked to see if this does anything, however).

    For MainConcept AVC (and H.264 in general) for final distribution (i.e., you are NOT uploading this file to GooTube or Vimeo for re-encoding):
    – destination resolution: 720p (1280×720)
    – frame rate: best to match source, however…
    – change the field order to Progressive
    – Data Rate Max: 4 Mbps, Ave: 2 Mbps
    – 2-pass VBR
    – Profile: Main
    – Audio: 48kHz, 160 Kbps
    – Render Quality: Best (on Project tab)
    * Save that template!

  • Short answer is: No.

    Generally, the fancy “professional” graphics cards do only three things: (1) they boost 3D rendering performance across the board (in apps that support the card specifically or the 3D standard in general), (2) they offload a specific type of rendering to the card (e.g., MPEG-2 or H.264 – again, in apps that support the card) and (3) they provided very narrowly defined advantages to specific feature (e.g., a small set of transition effects or other specific function – again, in special apps with the special card). So, if there isn’t a very specific function that you want to accelerate and a card in Nov. 2009 that matches the software from the same period, you won’t see any performance advantages across the board.

    The H.264 codec is not distributed with the free version of QT on Windows machines. I believe it is in QTPro, but not sure if it’d show up in the Render As options if you bought that anyhow.

    Even so, you have a number of great H.264 options: MainConcept AVC, Sony AVC and (more or less) Windows WMV. I currently prefer MainConcept for quality and stability.
