[TImothy Auld] “Markers are important to me and in my opinion they are barely functional in Legend, X, or Premiere. If there is one area when Avid still wins hands down, markers are it.”

Can you tell me what is lacking in markers for Premiere Pro and/or what it is that Avid does so well in this area?

For reference, here is a page describing Premiere Pro’s marker capabilities: Markers

    Thanks,

[Charlie Austin] “The odd thing, assuming it’s using bits of code from AE, is that the tracking isn’t really very good right now.”

Charlie, in general if you’re creating the mask to track, you want to make the mask the same or smaller than the object – cut on or just inside the area you want to track. The reason is that if you go wide of the selection, the tracker thinks you want to track that area too. For example, if you’re tracking a person in the foreground, cut the mask small and use the expansion to get the right size. If you track outside the person, you’re tracking background content which won’t jive.

In the confusing worlds of trackers, there are point, planar, 2d, 3d trackers and probably a couple more I’ve never heard of… 😉

    Hope this makes sense.

  • [Jim Wiseman] “Just thought the “burn the boats” attitude of the Adobe CFO was a bit shocking, considering the number of people they are leaving stranded.”

Jim, I think you may be reading into a statement too much and taking it out of context. I won’t try to convince you otherwise though. You’ve made your decision based on those things that are important to you. I can respect that even if I can’t agree with it.

However, to point out that you might have rose-colored glasses on, didn’t someone burn the boat with users the day FCPX shipped? Consider what FCPX 10.0.0 was then… No EDL, Source monitor, broadcast output, XML or OMF are just a partial list. Burned the boat on FCP8 which should have been 64-bit, RED workflows, native, etc.

    You might respond…
[Jim Wiseman] “I can still use FCP Legacy as an important part of these projects because I “own” it. Still works on my 2012 Mac Pro and so far as I can tell, on my new Tube. Also both programs are paid for and suitable for me, as I am obviously committed to the Mac.”

The same is true for CS6 except that its 64-bit, handles a whole variety of codecs and workflows that FCP really can’t. Enables cross-platform workflows with true exchange as well as FCP XML and OMF and AAF. Tight integration with standard apps like Photoshop and After Effects, ground-breaking technology for GPU, etc. etc. etc! Again, the real point is you might have a slightly biased point of view – which is okay. I just want to point this out.

As for Adobe, I promise you that we will continue to try to earn your business and perhaps some day we will find a way that makes you satisfied. Until then, I wish you…

Thanks for the video. I’ve forwarded your note over to the QE team to take a look. Lets see what they say.

  • I’d use Prelude to log your metadata if you need to and then check out this for exploring the Search Bin feature in Premiere Pro CC

    Alex,

Have you given thought to organizing via Search Bins? This is a new feature to help organize based on metadata. For example, you could mark all ‘good’ clips with a marker or metadata tag saying ‘good’. Then you can create a virtual bin using the search bin feature.

You can find out a bit more about the feature here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KplBC9qGtQE

Mike is spot on. Gone Girl was shot in Red 6K and it was successful in part because all of the system components were top notch. That’s not to say that you have to spend crazy money to get a reasonable RED experience – far from it – but the true advantage with any 64-bit native program (if written well) is that you can benefit more fully from the system components that make up your computer.

Big ones would be RAM – 32 or 64GB please; Disk Speeds – really important for something like RED, CPU and GPU.

I found this link that I am guessing describes what you feel is the bug:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9tuRHdSOe8

However, that was published in July of 2014 and I just tried it on Premiere Pro 8.2 (latest version) with a long clip and cannot find any discoloration or distortion though I am going through the clip frame by frame. Why don’t you update to the latest and let us know if you encounter it again.

  • In script format:

RADEKE, WITH SUBLIME, SATISFIED SMILE ON HIS FACE, BRUSHES BACK HIS SUPERHERO CAPE AND TAKES OFF INTO THE SUNSET…

    THE END

    😉

    Glad I could help.

It’s a system preference on the bottom. A new row is added when you add a non-Apple System Preference. Now in Premiere Pro, you should be able to choose CUDA in addition to OpenCL.
