I think he’s talking about not having to use Log and Transfer which rewraps the footage to Quicktime. To my knowledge for AVC-I you can’t without MXF4Mac plugin. am I in error here?

Well David, Premiere Pro has changed a lot and to be honest several years ago it deserved its reputation as a semi-pro editor, but no longer. I still think that many people do not give enough time to map out the ‘change factor’ involved in switching platforms or software or both.
Oddly enough, I find FCP sometimes very difficult because of the way it does things – but that’s mostly because I’m most conversant in Premiere Pro and so I don’t knock FCP for that…As I like to say, it’s 99% user error (or impatience!)

Assuming you are capturing as ProRes. Adobe will be compatible with this format or native EX1 files as well. Adobe’s FCP importer will help make it easier too.
Avid will likely be more difficult. You could download the Avid codecs for free and export them as DNXHD. Probably your best bet is to ask the client what they want because there is no universal media that will allow anyone to edit on any system.

I would love to hear about these problems, though perhaps this isn’t the right forum for it. I’m editing AVC-I on my laptop right now with little difficulty.

There is a video tab within the Media Encoder (click edit settings) and then you should be able to adjust the frame size accordingly. I would do the math to make sure you maintain the correct aspect ratio.

Did you know that Premiere Pro can edit a .vob directly off of the DVD with Premiere Pro CS4.1? No conversion would be the best approach in this case.

Ah… Adobe to the rescue here!
With Premiere Pro CS4, you can import a FCP XML and have all of it come across. It doesn’t matter in most cases that you’re moving from Mac to PC either. The only case where it could be a problem is if the PC version of QT doesn’t have the decoder for the format. However, ProRes is included. Apple HDV is not.
So…FCP>Export>XML>Type 4 (doesn’t really matter here)
Move assets and XML over to the PC.
Launch Premiere Pro
Ctrl-I (or double click in project window to import)…
Navigate to XML file
Be impressed.Hope this helps,
