Run off to the internets and find yourself the most recent version of MPEG Streamclip, and convert away!

Sure, bump your VO track up or the music track down to whereever you need it. The key here is to get it to sound right. Once you’ve got that, you can control the overall dB levels using the master volume. Just keep it below 0 so it doesn’t clip.
As far as recommended levels for final export, I have no answers, because it can differ based on final output needs. I set mine so nothing ever goes above -6.2, but that’s because it works for my workflow.

Yes. Make your image in PS, with a trasparent background. Export said image as a PSD, TIF, or PNG, being sure you save the transparency. Also, be sure to save as an RGB file.

There’s been reports that writing to NTFS drives from the mac (mostly from 3rd party apps) can cause file corruption, and even damage the drive structure.
I recommend formatting as extended-journaled, and using MacDrive on the PC to read/write to the drive.

The upgrade IS a full version. It just requires a previous serial # to be input during installation. For the love of God, don’t install 5.1, then install 7 on top of it. Start clean, install 7, and enter the old serial # when asked.

Go ahead and drop it in….the rendering will effectively make a hdv version of the clip you’re using (and will display that as a proxy, so the original footage is untouched).
A question I have is why you’re using HDV natively instead of capturing your footage as ProRes. It’s a lot easier on your system, even though the file sizes are substantially bigger.
