Tom – thanks – exporting thru the QT Conversion module worked fine. I’d been trying to get it done sending it thru Compressor. Now I just need to go back and make progressive videos to start with – to get rid of the interlacing. But we’re on the way!

Working in NTSC SD. And yes – seeing black where the Alpha should be. I’ll look for the unrendered in the QT Conversion module. Should I still look for a millions+ setting in FCP’s Animation with Alpha codec? That’s what I’ve used when doing this trick in After Effects – to carry the alpha. Regular ole millions (no +) doesn’t work.

    Tnx

My mistake – I should have written that my G5 is PXI-X – which is, apparently, what limits it to a Kona LS and SD from what everyone is telling me…

Thanks, Luke – From everything I can tell this is an earlier G5 with plain old PCI slots, no X, no e, no 33, etc. Right now I’m thinking of investing in just the minimum -to get SD only into and out of the G5 – while I try to budget a MacPro and a full-featured card. At present I’m digitizing my SD in another system (a legacy Media 100) and bringing it over to the G5 to edit with Final Cut. That’s really still in test mode, though, as I learn FCP.

Thanks, Arnie. This is helpful. One problem I’ve discovered is the G5 I’m using is PCI – which limits the cards it can take to SD, apparently. I’m looking for a used Kona LS – which will be cheaper – while I try to budget a MacPro quad.

Yes – absolutely nothing. Sorry I can’t be more helpful if you have the same question I had. From all I’m reading – haven’t had time to test – I should be able to do this. I’ve also read I will get better quality shooting PAL to start with. But here’s another question -this is for online tv in Europe. Do we need PAL at all?

Good thought, Bob I’ll go to their website and see what I’m in for… and see if I can find someone locally, as well.

Walter – thanks for the insight. Bob – thanks for the cautions and vote of confidence. Walter’s note on support is important. I also noticed the Kona appears to come with installation and operation manuals – and software – Blackmagic has only a disk. It’s no longer “weather” I purchase Aja or Blackmagic – I think I’ll go with Aja’s Kona LS.
    thanks, guys –
