Our studio has Sony PFM-510 plasma monitors. Since they have a bit of overscan in them we build our graphics inside the monitor scan we see. We have a crt HD monitor for fine tuning but what I see at home is about the same. We letterbox downconvert for our current analog channel and 10% on the sides is safe. We may use only 5% on the top & bottom because in the letterbox it looks dorky to have it higher.

The DT-V24L1DU has been replaced by the ..3DU which adds a few bells & whistles. Street price seems to be $4200. The HP/Dreamworks price is now around $2500. Hmm. It certainly doesn’t have the audio system, tc readout and the other features. On the other hand, if you don’t need them…? I certainly agree that you need to put your eyeballs on any monitor you are considering.

The HP/Dreamworks LP2480xz is touted as a color critical monitor for about $3500. Somewhat more pricey than the 2408 or even the Apple Cinema monitor but looking at the specs -30 bit color, etc., it would be worth considering. We are looking at purchasing them for refurbishing our edit suites, although we do have a Sony BVM-20 which we’ll continue to use.

I’d upconvert within FCP and work in PAL but if you don’t have a way to lay off the PAL to DigiBeta in the US you’ll have to do NTSC, lay off to DigiBeta and then convert on input at the station. Snell & Wilcox makes awesome converters but they are a bit pricey.

I would go to their website and click on each model. The spec sheets tell you what each one has and this would tell you the differences between them. If you don’t understand the differences you might need to consult someone like Bob Zelin who gets paid to help people who need to know. Sometimes he even does it for free on the Cow.

The AJA Kona will do what you want for input and output. If you’re making material for Asia, what standard will you be working in? NTSC? SECAM? PAL? It seems like standard challenges may outweigh the simple editing problems you have.

Not a thing. I did it that way for several years. I still on occasion make changes to improve the alpha channel. However, for multilayer comps TFT Pro saves time (therefore money) and for numerous lower third work it makes the process less tedious. I’m not paid by Glen to say this, nor do I get commission. Maybe I should…. 🙂

For a few dollars you can buy Tools for Television Pro from Glen Stephens and it will plug in to Photoshop and create alpha channels from the original. This will automatically make transparent alphas from the original. I use TFT Pro almost every day and it’s a money and timesaver. If you want to add more transparency go to Channels, turn off the RGB channels and work on the alpha channel in black and white to turn the white towards gray in whatever areas you select with the wand or marquis tools. I use the ramp tool to go from white to black for transparent rectangles etc. You can also airbrush areas with gray to add transparency.

They aren’t all that much bigger and I want to move and scale them into the 1920×1080 “frame”. As you alluded, I need more than 3 Gb RAM to work in motion at that resolution.Del
