Well, I shot a whole load of crap on the way home yesterday and as soon as I get a chance to upload the zip I will. My internet’s been spotty as of late. ( a pox upon ye, Time Warner) Actually the zip is 140mb. Anyone have a good hosting site that doesn’t time out easily?

Why not just upload it to a website somewhere and provide a direct link in your next post?

You shouldn’t need to re-re-compress the thing in Premier. After effects is used for Onlining all the time. Just write out your final from After Effects.

I thought that second post was a joke. Apparently not.

You should make your tutorial, put up a link to it and then suggest the COW host it based on response to your own site link. It all depends on quality and the ability to use the skill taught therein for diverse project applications.

  • also if you study the shot and track in masks to create highlight spots on your foreground subject that match with the background light sources, it’ll better sell the effect. For instance if your shot arcs around the table (or trucks by) then create an appropriately shaped “reflection” of the light source on all would-be-effected areas. A Masked adjustment layer additive glow would probably suit this. Just don’t overprocess this stuff, or you’ll get grainyness. If you can work in a higher bit-depth than 8 I would recommend it.

If you do it in Photoshop, make several different layers each with it’s own size “star” dot. That will let you use it later for simulating depth if you ever want to use it in a 3D comp. Also by making it in Photoshop, you can use it in any later comp you want. All it takes is minor manipulation of orientation to “not have the same starfield in every background”.

  • yup, the null layer trick was for 3d layers, I forgot.

Pre-comping is the way to go. Alpha issues; I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem. By “made a second composition and nested the first within it” I assume you mean you selected the layers you wanted to be separate and chose layer/pre-compose/keep all effects. That usually does it for me.

Tell you what, starting today I’ll begin snapping pics of some of the the grungy crap here in NYC that I see on my way to/from work everyday, and at the end of the week, I’ll post a message titled “Grunge for Grabbing” on this board (probably on Saturday Night) with a link to a couple different themed zips of the plain-jane pictures of “crap”. Hey free crap is always fun to find. I can’t guarantee anything, but free is free.

Jpg should be ok. Tif is going to be larger in file size. Gif shouldn’t be used at all. Png is my personal favorite. Premier hates bmp.
Hope that helps. Check your dpi in photoshop. A 1440×1080 file at 300dpi is overkill for video. 1440×1080 (or 50% larger) at 75dpi should be just fine. It’ll cut down the size of the file dramatically.
If you’re using XP, try checking out the image resizer powertoy from Microsoft if the Photoshop scripting is becoming a pain for you.

Unfortunately, you have to “smartobject” the layer before import, or something of that nature.
Placing a blank layer under the effected photoshop layer and merging them together will work as well, the problem being that you’ve just created a picture and it doesn’t retain its text qualities for editing.
I think I remember seeing that cs3 corrected this issue.
