    Before going out and spending a lot on plugins try doing the needed effect within the suite.

    There are only a few plugins/programs I would call necessary to keep up with trends. Zaxwerks, Particle Illusion, and Trapcode’s plugins.

    Hopefully they shipped you a copy too. I know there’s some law that says you can keep anything that gets shipped to you, even if you didn’t order it.

    I’m just guessing, but you probably don’t have any 3d modeling experience. This could be made a ton simpler if you could use C4D or Maya.

    You may want do a couple low-res versions of bits of the clip to show to your “boss” as he may not really understand the limitation imposed by AE 3D compositions. What everybody has described so far is going to turn out looking a bit like doom 1, with orient-toward-camera sprites and non-textured panels.

    play with your camera setting to see if you can adjust for the sheer scale of things needed for the comp.

    As far I ‘m aware. AE 3d is limited to the use of 2D planes in 3D space so you have two option for masking in 3D space. You either mask the 2D plane and set it at a desired depth, or you pre-compose the 3D composition as a 2D layer and mask out your selection on the 2D pre-comp.

    {If, for instance you needed to have a “cloaked ship” in your 3D space that you can see interacting (shadow) with other stuff then blinking out. You may want to consider pre-comping your layers in staged groups and re-stacking the pre-comps with the appropriately added mask. Play with your layers to deliver the illusion you’re looking for. 90% of AE is illusion of 3D anyhow.}

    I’m not certain I understand the question, can you rephrase it?

    My next collection will be of alpha-ed star fields @ 1200×1200… I need some myself, so you all should benefit from what I have to make anyhow.

  • There are only 2 digital effects in that shot.

    1. They added digital smoke to the extras sitting at the table…

    2. They digitally removed the magnetic rod that the ball was stuck to…

    The rest of the shot was a practical effect, mostly made up of people holding really still and a glass with fake water (and one fake olive) sticking out of it.

    If you’re under the impression that this shot was somehow time-remapped, go over it again and take the awe & mystery out of your mind. This shot is an illusion. You only think you saw him stop time.
