The number of audio and video tracks opened in FCP is a function of User Preferences. Click on the Timeline Options under User Preferences and you’ll see the Default Number of Video and Audio tracks. You can set them to whatever you like. I typically start with 4 Video and 8 Audio tracks for new projects or sequences.

I upgraded to EX1d in 2007 and later to EX3 and a couple of EX1Rs. I’ve been extremely pleased with the image quality from the 1/2 CMOS sensors and the low light sensitivity. I still celebrate the death of tape and have no problems with the workflow of getting clips into FCP or onto a clients flash drive. Using Sony’s free Clip Browser software is a must. Don’t rely on simply copy and pasting the BPAV folder. I have been using 16GB class 10 SDHC cards and M&R adapters with no problems but prefer to have a separate adapter for each card. Even then, I always use SXS Pro or SXS-1 cards for critical client work. If you use a USB reader, keep in mind that the Sony card reader (which reads SXS and SXS-1 cards) will not handle SDHC cards in any adapter and may damage them if inserted (if I remember the warranty warnings correctly).

I great workflow if you can bring the footage in originally as ProRes 422.

Risers are really noisy and with the 835 overhead and aimed at the riser, I’m guessing you’ll not be happy with the amount of noise and the amount of fall-off from those not underneath the mike. You may want to elevate the 835 on a mike stand in front of the stage. This may put the mike in the audience, but you’ll get less stage noise and better coverage of the participants. A couple of sand bags and an anti shock mike holder will be helpful.

You didn’t mention how many will be performing and whether they are stationary or moving around. The Sennheiser 835 is a cardiod mike which will help but it’s directionality may be too selective with whoever is below the mike.

  • You can record 110 minutes of 35Mbps full raster (1920×1080) progressive footage on one 32GB card, so you will need an additional SXS card or SDHC card in the second slot to record for two uninterupted hours. I have had no problems with 16GB class 10 SDHC cards and a M&R adapter on my EX1R cameras but I prefer to use the 32GB SXS-1 cards for critical client stuff. The EX1R is not well suited to a lot of run-and-gun hand held stuff without a camera bracket. I have a Redrock Micro 15mm rod system with a couple of pistol grips and a shoulder pad that works well.

I don’t understand the need to take XDCAM EX footage to ProRes at any time. You can edit XDCAM EX natively in FCP, render and export to a .mov file with the same settings and then use Compressor or Squeeze to compress to the files your clients need. I used to export edited files to ProRes as “master” files, but the only difference I saw was MUCH bigger file sizes with no increase in quality.

March 2, 2012 at 3:03 am in reply to: EX1 for Green screen shoot

I agree with Craig. I’ve shot a number of green screen projects for corporate clients with EX1/EX1R/EX3 cameras and I’ve had no problem pulling good keys. As you suggest, good lighting is important with separate flat, even lighting on the green screen. I always keep the subject 8-10 feet from the screen and use minus green gels on the kicker lights aimed at the back of the subject. I’m not sure that the minus green gels are that effective after reading other posts, but they are part of my dedicated green screen studio setup. Of course, blond hair and reflections on props, etc., will present problems, but you can matte those problems out in post if needed. Bottom line is that 4.2.0 with EX cameras work well for me.

July 7, 2011 at 3:49 am in reply to: sxs crash

Hi Craig, I have the same issues with my MacBook Pro after upgrading to OS 10.6.8. I repaired disk permissions, downloaded the update combo and reinstalled the SXS drivers exactly as you suggested and the problem persists. As long as I boot up with the SXS installed in the express card reader, everything is fine, but when I hot-swap the SXS cards, the system crashes. A semi-transparent grey screen moves down the page and instructs me to do a hard reboot. Interestingly, it only happens with the SXS cards. No problem with an MxR adapter and SDHC card.

Thanks for your normally spot-on suggestions, but this one didn’t work.

If you are into saving money with online training, check out the Cinema 4D training segments at https://www.lynda.com. You can’t ask questions, but the training is detailed and fairly comprehensive. It’s a great place to start, at least.
