April 14, 2012 at 2:49 am in reply to: Tripod for Sony EX3/EX1R

I don’t have a Cartoni, but I’ve used the Sachtler FSB6 for both my EX3 and EX1R cameras. I love Sachtler quality, but have switched to a Libec tripod with a 100mm ball and much larger sticks. Libec is not the quality of Sachtler, to be sure, but I appreciate the larger quick release plate, the heftier sticks and much greater stability. If you plan to add a 15mm rod system or hang any additional weight on the tripod, you’ll need something bigger than the FSB-6 IMO.

  • Thanks, Richard. I’m trying to avoid discovering a problem after the return period has expired. I don’t do event work, mostly corporate stuff with no interference from other competing systems. If you experts think I’ll be fine in most situations, I may keep the two system. I question why the warnings of two systems in different channel groups, but no warnings of two systems within the same block. Seems like the legal beagles would have a warning for both.

  • Thanks for the quick response, Ty. I’m in Colorado and have been using the older Lectrosonics both nationally and in Europe. One of the Lectrosonics is in the 700MHz range and now banned in the US, so I purchased the two Sony’s from BHPhoto. Their sales person said I would be fine, so I asked him to explain the comments in the manual before I was unable to exchange one of them. He was not able to reach a Sony expert, so I’m still questioning.

The Lectrosonics are older UM100 versions which work well, except that one unit now has a banned frequency. Rather than update the Lectro, I purchased two Sony’s for about the same price with a couple of cardiod mics that help in some echo-y locations.

Version 2.0 of XDCAM Browser is free, so the advanced functions of metadata asset management is what you’ll lose after the 30 day trial expires.

April 1, 2012 at 11:25 pm in reply to: delete clips in XDCAM browser

What version of XDCAM Browser are you using? In version 2.0 you can delete individual clips from the card before ingesting. Occasionally, I feel the need to do so before asking XDCAM Browser to copy the remaining clips to my computer, although as Michael suggests, it can be a little scary. I would never do so with client material, but if you highlight the clip and hit the delete icon on the Browser interface, you can delete one or more clips, as many as you have highlighted.

April 1, 2012 at 11:13 pm in reply to: Re name SXS card

PMW500 cameras may be different, but there is no camera function available to name cards individually for EX1/EX3 cameras. Neither can they be named from a computer. You can assigned a global name to all clips on each card, however in the camera menu under “Others” so that the information for each clip will appear in the clip metadata. I always use the same “SxS card in a specific camera and set up the clips to read “EX1R_1” “EX1R_2” “EX3,” etc. It helps when viewing the clips in XDCAM Browser, but the cards still appear as “Untitled” on the computer.

March 19, 2012 at 1:11 pm in reply to: Split clips on one card

If your clips span separate cards, you may want to change your workflow to using Sony Clip Browser software to ingest the footage on location and later use XDCAM Transfer software to rewrap the files and import them to FCP. You should not have a problem with split clips using Sony’s free software.

Try posting your “for sale” in the classified forum; and since the price is “firm” include the price and what version of the firmware your EX1 has currently.

March 9, 2012 at 3:54 am in reply to: Sony battery vs. the competition

Sony batteries work fine but they are WAY overpriced. Take a look at the Switronix “Series 7” batteries here:

They fit the same Sony charger as the U-60 so you don’t need a separate charger. I can run my EX1R cameras all day and still have two lights of reserve power.

  • Line level is an industry standard level for audio equipment like mixers and amplifiers. It’s nice to have the line level capability on the EX1/EX3 cameras if you want to feed house audio to the camera from a distant mixer or amp over a low-Z microphone cord. You’ll never get line level output from a microphone.
