An addendum …
I just tried this test again using a plain textlayer as described in the tut and it worked. I am left to think that it is choking on the size of the image. I can only imagine how it will choke on moving footage.

RoRK,
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the delay in response, I went back to the basics and re-did the entire test over following the tutorial to the letter.
I am using Emanuel Eriksson’s “Text that Blows Away Like Sand” Tutorial as see here:
https://library.creativecow.net/articles/eriksson_emanuel/sand.php
For my test I pulled in a static image at 320X2240 and precomposed it. I used the Mask from the original tutorial.
I changed the Explode Layer to my new image and kept the “Selection Map” set as he had it to “Wind”
I carefully set everything up as he had it set, replacing only the text layer with my image precomp layer.
In preview it appears to be working but nothing ever happens So I went for a test render, the entire computer and AE locked up.
Here are the PP settings I used:
Apply Effect>Simulation>Particle Playground to the bottom “Text” layer.
Open the Cannon pulldown.
Set Particles per Second to 0.Open the Layer Exploder pulldown.
Set Explode Layer to 4.Text.
Set Radius of New Particles to .50.
Set Velocity Dispersion to 0.Open the Gravity pulldown.
Set Force to 0.Open the Repel pulldown.
Set Force to 1.
Set Force Radius to 5.
Set Selection map to 3.Wind.Now set a keyframe for Radius of New Particles at 0 and another at :5 value 0.
Make the last keyframe a hold keyframe.Set this layer’s in point to -5.

Yes I have. Particle Playground chokes on 720X480 footage.

Yep To all who are following this thread I think I figured it out. If anybody still wants to know just let me know.

You sir are correct about the SFX and speed. I hastily added the SFX and it was not really what I was looking for. When I work out the technique I plan to add SFX that sound like a slower stressing bending sound.
I have reuploaded a new version HERE
I think I have two issues with it not looking realistic:
1 – The letter effect punches in backwards. In my mind the letters should first appear in the middle of letters and spread out as they are formed.
2 – The background should react to being stamped by appearing bent, stressed and cracked. I am trying to attempt this by using some textures and creating a diisplacment effect that I apply to tbe background using CC Glass. I think it is a matter of finding the right cracked and torn image as the Map
I am thinking of making a new DP MAP that uses a slightly larger version of the lettering, and then adding cracks and tears aroung the edges of the letters.
Thanks,
Dave

Man …. I got really close by doing the following:
1 – set the metal image as backgrounf and duplicate it.
2 – Write my text, then choose “Layer – Creat Outlines”
3 – Use the new “Outlines” layer as a track matte for the top metal layer, then precompose the matted layer.
Now the matted layer is invisible over the original metal image layer, by using the Bevel Alpha, it appears to punch thru the metal from behind. I used another greayscale image at a displacement map to try to get some stress marks.
I think if I experimented with different DP Maps I might be able to make it more convincing.
This is simple test and I would also add SFX of a heavy metal stamp and metal stress.
Any suggestions feel free.

Steph,
I would be happy to see what you did. I am not certain what the protocol is. Do I post my email? I also have a site with an upload area if w could PM.

I could wait so I did a quick test. I tried creating the text in AE and in Photoshop. I got the text to break through the metal, but it was blocky, it did not retain the bevel of the text.
I will keep trying.
