    January 17, 2006 at 8:58 pm in reply to: Newbie HVX200 P2 Question…

    [Ed] “You can record HD
to P2 cards *or* directly to a hard drive, like the Firestore, for example.”

    Well, yes and no.

You need a specialized and expensive solution like like the FireStore device to record to a hard drive. Not just any hard drive will work.

iPods drives, I believe, are only 4200. They are 1.8 inches drives, and I don’t believe they exceed 4200.

But it is a nice idea.

January 15, 2006 at 5:46 pm in reply to: Ideas on Speeding up P2 Card Import to FCP via Powerbook?

[Jan Crittenden Livingston] “Funny, I have been working with the 4 GB cards and find the small size transfers so quickly I hardly notice it. I have transfered so stuff of of 5 GB cards and it seemed to take forever in comparison.”

Jan, you are suggesting then that the cards be transferred via the PC Card slot on the PowerBook, and not imported into FCP until the shoot is completed.

Then after transferring each, use the Disk Utility to reformat to FAT32.

    Is that correct?

And how do you keep each card transfer folder named differently without writing over the previous one?

January 13, 2006 at 5:08 pm in reply to: P2 Slot obsceleted by Express slot on new Macs?

It’s a little unfortunate Apple elected to use the small 34 width Express Card.

For example, even with the adapter cited by Noah, you can’t use CF cards.

    There are fw readers however.

January 12, 2006 at 1:35 am in reply to: Panasonic Chip De-Mystified?

George, without getting into a battle here, what do you say to my point that if the camera produces acceptable footage, who cares?

Do you think specs are more important that actual footage?

Again, I’m not defending anybody, but it’s the quality of what the footage is that is crucial for my work.

    Help me out.

    Foolish question by me then:

If the picture quality is acceptable to you or me or someone else, why are we discussing it?

To me, it seems analogous to what is in Coca Cola or Pepsi or cheetos.

I’ve seen some pretty striking footage. Whether the chip is 1080i native seems academic if it produces footage like I’ve seen and at its price point.

  • I just went through the manual and found nothing on this.

Obviously you can view HD via the supplied component cables, but there is nothing on a FW to component pass through to a HD monitor.

[Noah Kadner] “The current PCMCIA stocked PowerBook models which are more than up to the task of in the field downloading will be available I’d expect through the end of 2006 new and for many years to come on the used market”

And I expect that their prices will drop both used and at the Apple Store.

[john sharaf] “I have to tell you, I’m a little concerned about the P2 workflow now that the current models of the Apple laptop don’t accept the card.”

    My question is simple.

Why move to this laptop is you know that current laptops will utilize the cards, and there isn’t an issue?

The new laptops aren’t shipping until February, and FCP5 won’t even run on them until late March,

By then, much of this will be figured out hopefully, including the release of Firestore, and other HD streaming solutions.
