May 4, 2015 at 9:16 pm in reply to: Sharing a thunderbolt raid drive between two new Mac Pros[jose fuentes] “I’m trying to find the best solution for my IT guys… …I’m a bit wary of this but they believe it’s a viable option so I’m just doing my research. “
IT guys invariably think they know everything if it’s in any way related to computers and networking – unfortunately most know nothing about the requirements of video, which differ greatly from the day to day data requirements of most businesses.
In this case, your IT guys “believe it’s a viable option,” because sharing video over T-bolt between two computers seems logical. Unfortunately, what sounds logical does’t always translate into reality, and this is one of this cases.
The issue is, there is no TCIP protocol built into Thunderbolt, so your IT guys will discover packet loss issues will prevent them from achieving seamless playback of video files across the network.

8000 pixels wide is too big for FCP…
If you’re planning to zoom in you will need them larger than 1920×1080… If there are static then 1920×1080 is just fine.

[Steve Connor] “As someone who has been using FCPX on a “truly professional level” as long as most people I certainly find FCPX is fast, but I’m quite happy to go back to tracks on projects as I’ve been using them for a large part of my career and I don’t quite have the loathing that other FCPX users seem to have for them.”
Very reasonable Steve… I must commend you.
Meanwhile, there are other X users here who just can’t seem to fathom that there just might be good reasons why experienced sound editors might prefer tracks.

Hi David,
I think part of the issue is that you striped your array as RAID 10 – that’s not recommended for video – RAID 0, 5, or 6 are the recommended RAID sets for performance, especially when 4K workflows are the goal.
For future reference, RAID 1 and RAID 10 are really best reserved for direct attached storage, and for files such as photos and documents, but not for the high throughput demands of video on a shared storage system.

May 1, 2015 at 11:35 pm in reply to: Suggested workflow for mixed Alexa 2k and Red 5K Offline to Online workflow?[Scott Clements] “I don’t understand the negativity. I told you what system I was running. I don’t know why you thought it was an issue of emotion vs. science. I wasn’t asking if I could cut natively. I was asking for an offline/online workflow, which I can definitely handle. Apologies for not clueing in about drive configuration (I’m working off a portable 2TB USB 3). Obviously buying a new system is not the answer. I would like to know what to do with the footage I have on the system I’ve got.
“Scott,
Please don’t confuse my frustration with negativity. I specifically asked you questions about your hardware config for a reason, some of which you didn’t answer. And, you said a new system is out of the question, though it’s pretty clear you don’t really understand just how far your system is from what is needed for a realistic 5K RED RAW workflow.
On top of that, I was quite specific about what I told you in regard to transcoding to a lighter codec, but you seem to have missed that entirely. I earlier wrote: “And, as you’ve already noticed, transcoding to a smaller format, such as HD, is NOT the answer either, as you will end up with an entire hodge-podge of scaling issues. So, you will need to transcode to a codec that is lighter, such as Pro Res LT, but in a frame size identical to that of your final delivery.” If that’s confusing to you please ask, but please don’t say I didn’t give you advice about using the system you’ve already got.
For the record, I am the 6th leading poster of all times here on the Cow, and I help people all the time with these issues. However, I will admit that I do get frustrated from time to time when people want to do champagne work on a beer budget.

May 1, 2015 at 11:09 pm in reply to: Suggested workflow for mixed Alexa 2k and Red 5K Offline to Online workflow?[Scott Clements] “Chris….that works pretty well for single clips, but multicam won’t play…even at 1/8.”
Scott,
As I tried to tell you before, your hardware is simply not up to the task. You have a number of issues on that front, and I’ll point them out, not to make you feel bad, but so you’ll understand how far away you are from the reality of seamless playback of 4K/5K RED RAW files.
1) Your single processor laptop doesn’t really have the necessary processing power for seamless playback of even a single stream of RED RAW 5K, much less 3 concurrent streams. Even the latest top of the line Mac Pros have a difficult time with 5K RED RAW, though they can get away with it by adding powerful dual GPUs and a very fast RAID.
2} Your single USB 3 drive (your media drive) does not provide the necessary throughput for three concurrent steams of 5K RED RAW – you need either a 4, 5, or preferably an 8-drive RAID.
3) Your laptop’s Nvidia GPU does not have the Cuda cores necessary to make up for the two problems above.
Hence, I told you earlier that transcoding to a lighter-weight mezzanine codec, such as Pro Res LT, was the ONLY way forward. And, I mentioned that you need to transcode to a LT using the frame dimensions of your final deliverable (not HD if you are delivering 2K).

[Bill Davis] “Prepare to be demonized. You literally can’t stand up in the church of the historic timeline and espouse that ANY of the existing dogma might be dated.
It’s like poking a wasps nest. “
That’s a total misrepresentation Bill – disagreements are the very essence of debates – that you and Carsten can’t seem to tolerate anyone with a different perspective is more like trying to silence the wasps than it is like poking them.

[Bill Davis] “Tracks were clearly the terminus of the collective NLE imagination … twenty seven years ago. ; )”
Audio tracks go back well beyond twenty-seven years Bill, and like it or not, they remain the industry standard for the vast majority of editors and audio technicians worldwide.

This is science, and thus you need to pay attention to the facts, not emotion. 5K video does not care what MacBook Pro was available on the day you purchased… You simply do not have the horsepower on your laptop mecessary to edit RED 5k. So, unless you invest in more powerful hardware, you will have to transcode to a lighter mezzanine codec for later conform.
And, as you’ve already noticed, transcoding to a smaller format, such as HD, is NOT the answer either, as you will end up with an entire hodge-podge of scaling issues. So, you will need to transcode to a codec that is lighter, such as Pro Res LT, but in a frame size identical to that of your final delivery.
Also, I asked for your media drive config, but you failed to mention that.
