  • Without divulging your hardware config, including your media drive(s), it’s pretty tough to help you. Sure, you can transcode to a lighter codec for later online, but that too has a cost. You’d do better by spending your dough on proper hardware that would enable the Holy Grail of seamless playback and editing of multiple codecs that Adobe makes possible.

OMG!!! I am so sorry for having a different point of view on the debate forum, I should have known better.

BTW Carsten, while those of us who prefer audio tracks may be old, ignorant, Luddites, we are nonetheless vastly superior in terms of sheer numbers, and you my enlightened friend, whether you’re ultimately proven right or wrong, are just part of a very tiny minority for now. And, until the majority embraces your belief system, should probably learn to expect and respect opinions that are different from your own.

Cool David, and thanks for sharing. I particularly liked the part about audio tracks… It’s too bad Apple forgot to include that “easy to use” feature in its current feature set. 🙂

  • Good luck finding PCIx cards for the G5 – as you may have forgotten, PCIe cards won’t work in a G5. And, you’re gonna have a heck of time finding drivers for the G5 that will work under Linux as well.

[Shane Ross] “Broadcast SD was never square pixel 16:9…only anamorphic. From what I recall from EONS ago.”

    That’s precisely what I thought…

Exactly, so why did you make it the centerpiece of the discussion?

    Ray,

I have found the various picture profiles to be pretty decent, depending upon my needs. If I am going to color grade, I use None, or Profile 4; if I want to deliver to a client or to a stock footage company who cannot be trusted to grade the footage, I’ve found Profile 2 to be the best solution, as it crushes that blacks in the camera, and the color looks pretty good too.

Keep in mind, as an experienced colorist, I typically prefer shooting and/or receiving video material with the widest possible latitude. However, as mentioned above, sometimes there are some shoots where you need to deliver material right from the camera, knowing it will never be corrected or graded, in those cases you just pick something that looks good to your eye and fire away.

  • [walter biscardi] “ProRes is never a good choice for a venue playback unless you are 100% certain there will be a machine capable of playback.”

When did I ever suggest using a machine incapable of playback? Disagreeing with me is one thing, but to make a silly assumption, simply because it appears to support your contention, is just a bad argument.

As I said before, h.264 is a processor intensive codec, it can be more taxing to playback seamlessly than Pro Res 422, not less taxing. FYI, this is precisely why h.264 files from camera acquisition are often transcoded to Pro Res for editing, and not just with FCP Legacy.

Of course, if you have old or inferior hardware, including a hard drive subsystem with minimal throughput, such as a single spinning hard drive, that could be an issue for seamless playback of any file type.

[alessandro sambini] “So: it would be just right to buy an other Lacie of the same kind, right? Does it HAS to be a thunderbolt 2? Same size? And then I would be ready to go? “

You could, but that is not ideal, because you would be striping across two separate enclosures. Your best bet would be to buy a 2-drive or 4-drive RAID so the drives in the RAID set are self-contained.

[alessandro sambini] “Would it be the same to buy a different hard drive?”

You have to have identical physical hard drives when creating a RAID.

[alessandro sambini] “Eventually, shall I create a striped or mirrored RAID array? (a thing that I can do via OSX, I infer)”

Increasing performance was always your requirement, so RAID 0 is what you need, unless you create a 4-drive RAID, which could handle a RAID 5 config (i.e. any single drive can fail without data loss). RAID 1 is a mirrored backup that is NOT ideal for video as it cuts your storage size in half and diminishes read speed as well.

  • [walter biscardi] “your first call is to the hotel to find out what the resolution of the projector will be.
    “

Listen to Walter here… The venue supplying the projector should always be where you start your investigation.

[walter biscardi] “H264 will be just fine and probably no more than 10mbps will be needed.”

That part I disagree with… Pro Res 422 is a better codec, it’s high performance (i.e. easily played back), and it’s very high quality. H.264 is a more processor intensive codec. H.264 is great for streaming via the Net because it’s a smaller file size, for for playback off hard drives Pro Res, though larger file size, is still better for seamless playback.
