Dave is correct, except he left out the reason why you should transcode, which might leaf you to think it’s just his preference.

The fact is, FCP Legacy does not, and never did, handle h.264 well. Yes, it appears to work, but that’s just an illusion. The issues you’re having are directly related to the apps underlying inability to properly decode h.264 and other mpeg variants once the timeline exceeds just a few minutes in length. This us probably due to h.264’s processor intensive nature.

And, the reason the workflow Walter mentions is traditionally the standard is that it’s the most efficient workflow, with the fewest points of potential failure.

Doing a “one light” pass to color correct dailies in advance of editing is done all the time, then when the picture is locked, the color correction or addition of a LUT can either be kept on all clips or deleted at the grader’s discretion.

Let’s not forget that all this hubbub about cutting the movie Focus gave some very need exposure to a pretty foul B-movie with a 56-rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The message to Apple was probably “Help, we’ve got a real mess on our hands here, if we fail so do you.” Whooptie Doo, what an accomplishment, there have been better films spliced together by hand with Scotch Tape.

I agree with Bob 100%…

The Cloud and Cloud Storage will EVENTUALLY be ready for primetime for ALL of us, big and small, rich and not so rich. But for now, unless you can afford to lease long-haul Dark Fiber, which is and will continue to be VERY EXPENSIVE for the foreseeable future, do what Bob says, and setup a realistic, inexpensive backup system. Or better yet, adopt the storage system often referred to as “Best Practices,” which is a 3-tiered storage system that includes online (fast, disk-based), nearline (not so fast, disk-based), and archive (preferably LTO Tape).

So, I sincerely wonder, why is it you guys aren’t teaming up on Walter Murch to call him a Luddite? After all, he’s just repeating many of same things David Lawrence and I spoke of four years ago, immediately after the EOL of 7 and the launch of X.
