October 28, 2015 at 11:23 pm in reply to: Does anyone think FCPX is NOT a Professional NLE?

[Bill Davis] “But Tim, that’s not been an argument I’ve EVER read here. I can’t recall anyone posting the equivalent of “if you honestly gave it a fair trial and don’t find it appropriate for your workflow – you’re still a fool for not liking it.”

Opps!!! The quote above is just more fabricated BS… Or, if it’s perhaps senility setting in, then I do sincerely apologize.

Does the following statement sound even remotely familiar, or even close to the “equivalent” you now deny no one “EVER” wrote?

[David Roth Weiss] “And, just as one does not have to jump off a cliff to know it’s not right for them, no experienced editor has to become fully proficient with an app to know its not a good fit for there needs. I made the decision after just three edits… I later went back and cut a project with X, and arrived at the same conclusion. Does that make me somehow deficient?”

October 28, 2015 at 11:12 pm in reply to: New 2015 iMac will not run Yosemite

[Steve Connor] “FWIW my Adobe apps seem to be running fine on the latest El Cap”

    Here too…

    Bob,

Just because Adobe is not recommending El Capitan at this moment in time, installing it on your new imac is NOT going to cause it to blowup or melt down. In fact, one of the great features of the Creative Cloud concept is the ability to try any Adobe CC 2014 or 2015 app and then completely blow it away if you’d like.

    What exactly is your fear?

[Bill Davis] “Just last week, DSW spent multiple posts here arguing that X is somehow deeply lame at audio handling. Then other guys stepped in and indicated that they have absolutely NO trouble cutting audio on it at a professional level.

So what’s the truth? Is X crap with audio? Or is it fine with audio except for those who can’t or don’t want to make it work? And if I have the temerity to write a sentence like that – is that me arguing that I think that those editors are stupid as some here would imply? Or is it actually just objective truth. Folks demonstrably cut pro audio with it – so it can cut pro audio just fine. Period.”

Jeeze, how many times are you going to dig yourself into the same hole Bill? Please see my earlier response to your similar overblown and patently false statement you made prior:

[Bill Davis] “Allegations like someone saying that you can’t cut professional soundtracks because it’s somehow “crippled” relative to other NLEs”, that too is a a complete mischaracterization of that conversation. While I admit to absolutely hating the entire magnetic timeline both in concept and in practice, I never said it was crippled, never said it prevented anyone from getting their work out the door. In fact below is my summary on the topic:

[David Roth Weiss] “I would have to say in summary that, currently Adobe’s implementation is in fact the better and more accurate approach to sub-frame audio editing that better emulates the sub-frame editing capabilities of a DAW. This doesn’t mean that FCP X is for amateurs, or that editors using X can’t produce excellent work, including audio editing and mixing inside FCP X, only that in a fair comparison of both apps, at this point Adobe has the more advanced implementation of audio editing. To be fair, it’s also more expensive… But, also to be fair, with that added expense, the user also gets access to an even better audio editor (Audition), and the entire suite of additional apps as well.”

Does that really sound close to: “X is somehow deeply lame at audio handling?” What’s lame are your feeble attempts to win the debate by fabricating complete BS to defend yourself when your best arguments don’t hold water.

Oh, and BTW, at the risk of being redundant, in that same post I also wrote: “In addition, as a journalist by trade, when I make a mistake or quote someone else who made a mistake, I print a retraction, because I own my words once they go to print. That’s not something you typically do Bill, and if you’d like I’ll point that out in spades, but I have every confidence that I won’t need to, because though this post is clearly deserving of a Bill Davis retraction, I won’t be holding my breath.”

  • What exactly are the specs of those WAV files Esther? Please keep in mind, no one here is being paid to answer questions, and whenever you ask a question, if you don’t give us the necessary info we’d need to give you an educated answer, it means extra back and forth posting, which is not efficient for you or for those trying to give you help.

  • [Jim Wiseman] “My only problem is with your supercilious attitude and knee jerk reactions.”

Jim, had I not earlier suggested you were “silly” because you won’t pay $50/month for software which you yourself said you “prefer,” I seriously doubt you’d even be writing to me now. BTW, since you explained that you’re working on pro bono stuff for the most part now, that was a good enough explanation for me.

With regard to the “supercilious attitude” you’ve attributed to me, why not delve into the Cow archives, which, as the #6 leading Cow poster of all time, contain some 16,432 of my posts, and see how just many actual examples of supercilious posts you can actually find?

To save you the trouble Jim, what you will find in the Cow archives will be, almost exclusively, many thousands of helpful pro bono consulting and technical troubleshooting responses to Cows in need, offering my help and experience on a host of different subjects I’ve worked hard to understand or even master. And, you will also find many popular articles, reviews, and tutorials drawn from my 45-years of industry experience as well.

So, if you’d like to try to make a legitimate case that actually proves your assertion, I encourage you to try. Do keep in mind however, that even if you’re able to find 164 examples in which you feel I’ve exhibited a “supercilious attitude,” that would constitute less than 1% of my activity on the Cow since it’s inception, which is hopefully within the bounds of correctness for most of us imperfect human beings. If you disagree, please let me know and I’ll apologize openly for being less than perfect.

  • [Bill Davis] “A large portion of the negativity that still surrounds its reputation is undeserved.

That message keeps getting promoted – particularly here where people like Aindreas and DRW have taken great pains over many, many months to constantly and publicly promote opinions that are contrary to the facts of it’s capabilities.”

Actually, that’s a fabrication that mischaracterizes my messages here completely. The fact is, the majority of my posts are directed about the style (or lack of style) of the arguments here, not the capabilities of the application. As an example, in response to the question posed, doe’s anyone think FCP X is not professional software, my response was: [David Roth Weiss] “There are no unprofessional NLEs.”

And, with regard to the issue of the audio capabilities of X vs. Premiere as characterized in the quote below:
[Bill Davis] “Allegations like someone saying that you can’t cut professional soundtracks because it’s somehow “crippled” relative to other NLEs”, that too is a a complete mischaracterization of that conversation. While I admit to absolutely hating the entire magnetic timeline both in concept and in practice, I never said it was crippled, never said it prevented anyone from getting their work out the door. I have used Voice123.com and love it – you can get free auditions where VO talent will record a few lines of your VO for client approval, and ever VO artist has online sample reels which allow you to quickly slam through bunches of voices to select those that seem to have the qualities you need for the gig you’re working on.

October 28, 2015 at 6:17 pm in reply to: El Capitan and Adobe Apps

It certainly boots faster Steve… I’ll grant you that.

However, the question I raised is based upon “cost-benefit analysis,” which is really the basis of many, if not most, of my posts here on The Cow.

In this case, whatever the advantage may be of updating the OS, if it is known that it can potentially put an editor’s fundamental source of revenue at risk, any user considering the upgrade/update, especially without making a protection clone first, is clearly NOT weighing the costs vs the benefits. And, a mistake can be a sure way to lose clients, and in some cases, potentially a career.

Since managing post-production is every bit as important for professional editors as performing their craft, and since I see that often overlooked here, I raise the question about the importance of upgrading the OS to get people thinking as if they’re managing a real business, because most are. And, because good and bad habits tend to follow editors throughout their careers, learning to think like a business/facility manager or a post-supervisor, and at least knowing (and hopefully adopting) “best practices,” is something of enormous value for editors at every level. I suspect you most likely agree with me, but by all means, please respond if you don’t.

October 28, 2015 at 3:48 pm in reply to: transcoding avchd footage

AVCHD is not a particularly hi-performance codec, so you may find that complex timelines or multi-cam workflows with many streams will improve if you first transcode to Pro Res or DNXHD. However, if you do mostly simple workflows with just 1, 2, or 3 layers, and it all plays back seamlessly without dropping frames, just continue to edit natively.

[Steve Connor] “Any more detail on that please, if you are still saying that after the first point update to El Cap then there must be a real problem!

The big question is why would a professional editor sucessfuily editing away on a perfectly running Mac need to update to El Capitan?
