FYI, I’m back to being an indie filmmaker just like you now.

Meanwhile, take that older card out now, do not pass go, etc., etc. While in the days just a few years back, sharing the chores between cards was a good thing, nowadays the cards are so powerful you just don’t need to use two cards unless you really splurge and go with two very powerful cards. But, the days of splitting display chores between two poorly matched cards like yours are long gone.

Since your seq is so simple, have you tried an old fashioned EDL to see if it differs from the XML or AAF?

Please sir, don’t get me wrong, I’m all about detail and precision, and as you know, I’ve been helping you and others solve these hardware riddles here since caveman days. My only jab at you was that you’re having graphics card issues, but never once mentioned that 2nd card, I just happened to notice it in one of the graphics you posted and was surprised to see it was not on your radar.

For the record, that older card can’t be helping, it’s ancient, and can only hurt you. Your GTX 780 supports three displays, so there is no good reason why you need that old piece of iron onboard.

In addition, why are you stuck on Mavericks? It was Apple’s shortest lived version of the OS ever, and was not beloved by software developers. If you’re in the middle of projects I can understand your reluctance to shift to a new version, but on a Mac it’s easy to build a test boot drive on a FireWire or USB drive. Call me, I’ll walk you through the safe way of doing it if you’re nervous (my number is easy to find).

So Tom,

Exactly why did you leave the GeForce GT120 installed in your computer? And, why did you not mention it in any of your rather long explanation? With the second care you’re probably either overheating your Mac or drawing too much current from the power supply. Have you tried taking the 2nd card out?

Hi Monica,

Your card uses OpenCL with Adobe, but that card is ancient and slow as molasses. You really should update to a new Nvidia card, which will use the much better Cuda drivers to drive the Mercury Playback Engine. Call OWC and ask their Mac experts which card you need for your specific Mac – without one of those cards you will be struggling to playback and render inside Adobe CC.

I have never seen anyone achieve an acceptable result using any of the techniques described above, but I’ll be very happy to hear if any of these are not huge wastes of time that ultimately achieve nothing fruitful.

Having tried and failed at all of these, except using the plugin Chris mentioned, I’d make sure to try his solution first.

Unfortunately your client made a tremendous mistake for which there is no magical fix. And, though you never really mentioned the frequency of the light shifts, if it’s really constantly changing over short intervals, you’ll never achieve a satisfactory result even if you go frame by frame. So, you’d better start thinking about covering up most of the talking heads with b-roll.

Expecting a complex nested sequence to behave as expected with complex time remapping is simply overly ambitious.

On the other hand, time remapping using an exported file should work just fine, so I would have to assume that you have most likely added a bad keyframe somewhere.

You will absolutely have to transcode ALL of your footage. Since you did not mention what type of hard drive subsystem you have (RAID), and since no delivery spec was mentioned either, it’s really not possible to gauge which proxy and pixel dimension is the best for your project, however it should probably be ProRes LT, using the same pixel dimensions as your final deliverable (***because any graphics you create, and any repositioning or compositing you do will not require adjustments).

You have an issue with fields on the footage, which must be interlaced. Since field issues do not show up on computer displays that would explain why you only see them on your video monitor. This is one of the reasons why professionals always monitor with a TV or broadcast monitor, and why amateurs without I/O devices and real video monitors often get their shows rejected by broadcasters.
