March 4, 2020 at 11:09 pm in reply to: Adobe pulls out of Vegas Conference – CoronavirusThe possibility of dying on a trip to NAB makes the whole endeavor that much more exciting, do ya think? But, for those who work for others, are they going to take care of your family if you die of Coronavirus for the good of their company?

Just google it, there are serial numbers all over the internet. Just try to avoid the ones distributed by hackers who’ll take over your Mac and try to extort all your hard earned money to unhack you.

Right now, the most powerful Macs are the new MacPro and the new MacBook Pro, with little in between, so the only choices are: 1) spend huge for the MacPro; spend pretty darned high for a laptop on the MacBook Pro.
I think Apple could make life easier for everyone if they’d create a workhorse in the middle, but there’s no doubt it would ultimately kill off lots of sales of many if the new MacPros, simply because most buyers in this market are, as Bob Zellin often laments, notoriously cheap.

I think that’s a big part of the issue Jeremy. I read a piece about how tough it was for the engineers at SuperDuper to rewrite their software to conform to the new design of Catalina. The payoff is, as you mention, that the OS never changes, so backups and clones only need to backup the data once the OS is written to the backup drive.

I just cloned again using Carbon Copy Cloner and it was much faster this time, though still not as speedy as I am used to. The clone was only 181gb, and it took 57.5-mins to clone to a very fast USB3 thumb drive. I used to be able to clone about twice as fast.

All of the above Oliver. It’s a real bummer for me, as I have always been a huge fan of cloning, which gave me a fearless method of trying out new software configurations without any danger of ending up down the river of no return that early adopters often encounter.
So far, I have yet to complete a clone using the latest version of Carbon Copy Cloner… I just couldn’t wait the 4 to 5 hours required. I’ll try Super Duper eventually, but I’m not very optimistic. Time Machine also took about two hours to backup only about 225mbs, was is also painfully slow.

I bought a 15” MBP just 10-days before the 16” was announced, and I was not happy. However, Best Buy let me trade it in for a new 16” model last week. Phew!!!
I’m also quite happy with mine, and pleased that Apple has figured out new ways to make their hardware and software much more automated and seemingly “user aware.” Since I was migrating from one new computer under Catalina to another, the setup process was easy as pie.
One thing I’ve noticed is that both cloning and Time Machine backups under Catalina are much, much slower than the same processes ever were before. I’m not sure what’s up with that, but those are definitely things users should be aware of.

I just acquired a brand new MacBook Pro with an i7 proc and 16gb RAM – it’s remarkably powerful right out of the box, and so far I’m quite pleased with its ability to easily handle my editing of both RAW stills and 4K video.
It appears to me that Apple may have finally figured out how to get their hardware to work as needed and expected for its power users, and I’d expect the new MacPro will be a real beast.
FYI, I’m working under OS X Catalina now, and I’m really pleased with Apple’s newest additions to its built-in apps, especially Photos, which now makes it fast and easy to edit and curate huge numbers of stills.

You scale up a bit until the black portion goes away, period, full stop. You probably should not crop in advance of that either. In the future, import full frame and then scale up, your images will typically not be noticeably softer, because you’re only scaling a few percent.
