  • Jonathan,

Just as you wouldn’t hop in a Formula-1 racer to learn basic driving skills, you shouldn’t expect to be able to operate a sophisticated color grading tool by jumping in to fix a complex issue without first learning the basics of Resolve and the basic principles of color grading.

Color grading is not just about the look of your video, it has underlying science and standards that a colorist can’t ignore, and Resolve has tools and techniques that aren’t just intuitive like cutting picture and sound.

So, for you to be successful at grading and matching these types of clips, you either to learn color grading principles in general, and the Resolve app, or you’ll need to hire someone who is. And, the only way for you to learn these things is to learn Resolve and grading by starting at the beginning and learning via tutorials, which are all over YouTube and the internet.

  • The items you’re missing are stored in a database inside Premiere, when you manually move video elements to another drive that breaks the links in the database. That move should have been done inside of Premiere using the apps media manager, which would have copied the media and updated the database.

If you still have a copy of the project from before your manual copy you should redo the copy letting Premiere do the heavy lifting instead of Apple or Microsoft.

The job you’re looking to automate is the job you get paid to do. And since the average clip in most documentaries is appropriately only 4-seconds, you should have plenty on the head and tail to work with.

While I prefer to do the cutting in the edit bay, not in the camera, it’s often easier to cut a show in the long run that has more and different angles, though it can be frustrating at times.

  • Personally, I really don’t use that type of workflow, I would just cut it from scratch in Resolve, or finish the cut in Resolve, rather than bouncing back and forth between Premiere and Resolve, especially when the project isn’t yet locked. So, somebody else will have to help you.

  • Joe,

Most colorists simply don’t deal with sound in these situations, because of the issues you’ve encountered. Most of us would export a single audio track of the entire program if an audio work track is really necessary, and just sync that up for reference purposes.

Unless both cameras were setup identically in every respect, including deep settings such as sharpness, you won’t have a baseline that would indicate the difference in the two cameras. In any case, tiny differences sharpness and noise can greatly influence file size. And, I’m not talking about aberrations visible to your eyeballs – you might think the cameras are setup identically, but you’d have to check every setting in the menu to be certain.
