  • I’m not Bob, nor do I play him on TV, but… I have sold several Fusion IOFX cards in our ProMAX ONE and ONE Plus workstations, and indeed they can make a huge difference in 4K/5K playback. FYI, we stripe two together in our highest end configs…

FYI, not only are they faster than SSDs, they have essentially zero latency, which cannot be said of many SSDs when striped together in RAID configurations.

    Hope this helps…

  • The default pixel dimensions for PowerPoint slides is 960×540 pixels – while full HD is 1920×1080 pixels. So, if you’re editing and exporting your PPT at full HD screen size, you’re scaling at 200%… So, it’s no wonder that your video looks pretty horrible.

I’m NOT sure if the frame size in PPT can be scaled larger… If so, that’s what you need to do…

As Mark suggested, exporting TIFFs will help, but only a tiny bit, as you can’t make gold out of lead, no matter hard you try.

You can try scaling the images in After Affects or Motion, both of which have superior scaling engines to FCP, but attempts at alchemy will only go so far…

    Hope this helps…

Uninstall and reinstall the latest drivers… The drivers on all I/O devices tend to get corrupted quite easily, especially if you have a crash or have to force a shut down of the system for some reason.

  • Hi Edward,

Your question is very similar to, “how much does a car cost.” 🙂 There are simply way too many variables for anyone to know the answer, and that includes your would be employer. I’ve personally cut one 60-minute documentary in under week, while another took 1.5 years.

And, whatever you do, DON’T cut it on a flat rate. If you do, you will have everything to lose and absolutely nothing to gain, and you’ll most certainly lose in the end.

Not to mention, there’s only one reason he wants to pay you 50% at the end instead of paying you in equal installments – he knows you’ll hang in there until the bitter end to get that second half of the dough, and he’ll hold that over you forever, long after your obligation is fulfilled. I’ve seen that played out a thousand times.

If I were you, I’d offer him a deal at $750 per week, but payable every Friday – period, end of story. If he balks, just take a hike. Indentured servitude will ruin any creative endeavor, and not only will you lose oodles of money, you’ll have nothing to show for your time, because if you’re not happy in you work the project will invariably suck.

    I hope this helps…

[Aindreas Gallagher] “hi, stupid question david – do you know anyone shifted from fcp to ppro at all thinking about, or talking about employing speedgrade for internal production house finishing for certain kinds of stuff?”

As you know Aindreas, there are NO stupid questions… 🙂

I do indeed have some customers who have switched to ppro who are using Speedgrade for color correction and grading. Not a lot really, but that’s simply because Resolve lite is free, and many who are committed to learning a new tool would simply prefer to use the tool considered my most to be either the “state of the art,” or the most widely used by professionals in their market space.

But, for the record, you should look at Smoke as a perfect example of a very powerful finishing tool, that had editing capabilities, but was never considered to be a fully-fledged editing application. Even now, since it has been given even vastly more editing capabilities, there are very few, if any, who would consider using Smoke as a true editing app in place of Avid, Adobe, or X.

I think you may have misconstrued the intent of Blackmagic…

I think it’s not their intent to create a “full-featured” NLE to replace your current NLE, but rather to provide a toolset for finishing editors to give them some fast and powerful editing capabilities so they don’t have bail out of Resolve and into a NLE for tweaks, shot replacements, etc.

  • [Bob Zelin] ” Since this original offer, we have tested Thunderbolt Networking with the new Mac Pro, and it is very inconsistent with speeds, and does not work. The simplest 1GbE network offers more reliable results than a Thunderbolt network – even using the new 2013 Mac Pro.”

    Hey Bob,

According to our engineers at ProMAX, the explanation is: “The issue is using the ‘Thunderbolt bridge’ which is built into Mavericks (any maybe older versions). Because there isn’t a NIC card, all of the processing has to be done in the CPU, which creates inconsistent results over Thunderbolt.”

You and all FCP 7 users can continue to limp along for a while, but inevitably you and all others will hit the wall, and you’ll have stop using FCP as a crutch.

I would advise you to move to Adobe CC immediately and become skilled in updating your older legacy projects in Premiere, which has been designed to make the transition easy.

    At least you guys CAN go to NAB. I blew out the cartilage in my knee, and now I can’t go. :{

I do hope you will both stop by the ProMAX Booth though, there’s some awesome new stuff we’re showing this year that you’ll see everywhere else next year.
