[Dennis Radeke] “Adobe has been an agile shop, utilizing scrum since CS5 but you couldn’t see the results until we switched to the Creative Cloud model
I think it’s been a fantastic model for development of features and workflows. It’s definitely benefited our customers.”
There was almost an entire episode of HBO’s comedy, Silicon Valley, centered around the implementation of SCRUM and coders initial rebellion against it. It was TV well worth watching…

[Franz Bieberkopf] “28,100 Editors nationally in 2012, projected to be 28,300 by 2022 (less than 1% growth over 10 years).”
Had Apple simply moved forward with FCP 8 as most editors truly desired, the projections for 2022 would probably be much, much higher, perhaps as maybe even as high as 28,450 editors. 🙂
A few years back the Wall Street Journal classified Post-Production as one of America’s Top-10 Dying Businesses, so it’s no great wonder that it’s growth might be miniscule over the coming years. Right?

Hi Rich,
Theoretical throughput calculations of a 5-drive RAID array are fairly simple if given enough data, but you make absolutely no mention above of how the drives in your Drobo are striped together and configured in a RAID set. Although I’m not 100% with Drobos, and do generally consider them to be prosumer solutions, I am aware their BeyondRAID software has many different ways of automatically configuring drives, and I’m certain there must be manual configs as well, but until you spill that info, there’s no chance anyone here could do anything other than hazard guess about the potential throughput of your Drobo drive subsystem.
[Rich Camp] “I had in it 5 drives, 3x 2tb Black Caviar WD drives, plus 2x 4th HGST drives but found out the HGST were not as fast as the Black Caviar so I removed them.”
Can you please explain how you measured the speed in this case?

[Scott Cahill] ” from what I have read and the little testing that I have done you still deal with weird latency issues and not near the speeds that you would expect from TB.
Just wondering if the new Mac Pro acting as the hub solved (or bettered) any of the latency or speed issues?”
I’m not Bob, nor do I play him on TV, but I’ll answer this since Bob has not.
Scott, it’s not so weird that there are latency issues – there’s simply no protocol currently that effectively communicates to a server via thunderbolt, making shared video storage impossible.
TCP/IP bridging over thunderbolt is at best, extremely inconsistent. So, it’s not a speed issue, it’s an issue of this inconsistency, and even if your computer had a dozen T-Bolt ports on different busses that wouldn’t solve the problem.

Alex, you say the computer is running just fine, but you left out whether your RAID was still mounting.
If you’re simply getting an error message, but the RAID set still mounts and you have access to the data thereon, it’s possible you’re experiencing the precursor to a drive failure. If you can access the data on that RAID you’d best back it up to something just as fast as you can.
Once backed-up I’d reformat the RAID to see if that makes a difference. It’s possible that a minor difference in the OS you upgraded has caused the issue, and a reformat under the OS could fix the issue. Id not, and you still receive an error message, you should consider replacing that drive on way or another, either via the warranty route or by purchasing an identical drive.

This is unfortunately a very common problem when attempting to create a shared storage environment for video streaming on a NAS designed for standard “non-video” file sharing.
There are MANY variables you are up against Michael, including: inherent latency, the sheer number of video users, the number of hard drives in your array, etc.
If building a shared storage environment for video on a simple NAS were as easy as moving Word docs etc., not one of the companies advertising shared storage solutions here on The Cow would be in business.
Your high school is going to have to invest some money if you want a working media lab.
We at ProMAX do this all day everyday, and can help you with an affordable solution. Feel free to call me at 949/861-2709 if you’d like my help.

[Bobby Mosca] “On the other side of the coin, every shared storage company says that you can use FCPX with their shared storage system – but no one is “banging the drum” like they are for Adobe or AVID or DaVinci.”
Well, given that FCPX was not really designed for collaborative workflows from the start, and that its adoption by larger facilities and larger workgroups has been very slow, why would shared storage manufacturers want to throw their R&D resources at it? Where’s the value???
Like ALL the other companies in the shared storage sector, our Platform and Platform Studio DO support FCPX, but, like all others in this sector, we’re not going to be throwing lots of resources at it until it proves itself in the marketplace as a REAL contender for the many companies who REALLY need shared storage and collaborative workflows.
