I can tell you precisely as I just did the same in my older Mac – the two new Toshiba 3Tb drives I tested using the AJA System Test yielded Write speeds of 368MB/s and Read speeds of 345MB/s. The newer SATA drives are a tad faster than comparable older hard drives.

Update: after running the test several more times and changing the parameters a bit I got even better numbers – Write speeds of 385MB/s and Read speeds of 374MB/s.

You’re going to want a Thunderbolt RAID when you get your new Mac, so why not just put two SATA drives in your old Mac and stripe them for now as an inexpensive interim solution?

Hi Jeff,

Unfortunately no, at least not in recent times. I have used every brand of I/O out there (AJA, Blackmagic, Matrox, even Bluefish, at one time or another, but I have not had to digitize a tape in the last few years.

FYI, if you haven’t already checked with Bluefish to see how they handle dropouts you might want to. The Bluefish cards are not inexpensive, but they are superbly manufactured cards with very well designed drivers.

Just for the record, what tape deck is the primary deck you’re capturing from? I hope it’s not a Sony J3 deck, as I’ve had nothing but trouble with those decks reporting timecode breaks where there are none.

If you are even contemplating using DaVinci Resolve in the future your ONLY bet is to get a Blackmagic Decklink card (or Thunderbolt device if you have a new Mac Pro cylinder).

If Resolve is not on your horizon, then you might consider an AJA or Matrox I/O card or device.

It seems that most NLEs have some issues with nested sequences. You’re better off exporting your timeline as a single file and using that file as a master to encode any other file types from Media Encoder.

It would only be a bad idea if you don’t want or need 2X the throughput and 2X the realtime performance over a single drive. Yes, there is a higher possibility of drive failure in any RAID, but if you don’t backup everything you’re cruising for a bruising whether you have a single drive or even RAID5 or RAID6 protection.

No one knows for sure because Yosemite is simply too new and you’re using an older GPU.

Have you searched the web for a new driver for your NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285? Sometimes you have to replace the driver manually on older GPUs, as the plug and play driver the OS installs is either a generic driver or one that’s not up to date.

Yep, that’s also certainly another possibility.

Even if you are editing DV your sequence settings should be changed to Pro Res, which will keep your titles and graphics in 4:2:2 color space, meaning a whole lot less interpolation of missing pixels will take place. DV works in 4:2:0 color space, which chucks out loads of pixels due to its much lower color space and inferior older compression algorithm.
