The stills are huge, which isn’t all bad, in the sense that its easier and better to scale down then up. But, they are way to large to work with in FCP, unless you’re planning on zooming all the way in to extreme close-ups of the pores on people’s faces…
So, you’ll have to have someone with Photoshop resize the stills for you. In this case they would simply resize down to about 20% of the current size, and save these copies of the originals as PNG or TGA. That would give you plenty of room to make moves on the stills, but will leave you with managable file sizes that FCP won’t mind, and most important of all, zero compression. Lots of people do use JPEGs, which are smaller in size, but I prefer to use the other uncompressed formats when working from pristine uncompressed stills, which your stills sound like.
After resizing you’ll bring then into FCP and size them or animate them on the timeline in the motion tab. And, you’ll have to render them when done to see the full quality, which should be superb.

Not enough info Frank. What are the pixel dimensions of the original stills? Also, conversion to jpeg may have made them look better to you eye for one reason or another, but that conversion comes at a price, which is another compression hit to your photo. You’d be better off converting to PNG or TGA — they are larger files, but they don’t automatically involve compression, which is unavoidable when converting to jpeg.

I’m fairly certain that I could clear it up by running through the TBC on my UVW-1800, but, since I’m running ref off my BM card, that too creates issues.

Its the dubs to DV that are actually creating the problem. Unfortunately, the giant worldwide stock house we use is stuck in the world of VHS viewers, which is a royal pain in the neck for me. Everything is a workaround.

Try downloading and running Applejack on your computer. It cures many issues that can show up as kernal or memory errors. Once installed it is run by pressing Command + S at stsytem bootup after the Apple startup tone sounds. Then type applejack – auto – restart and just let Applejack have its way with you computer. It just might repair your issues.

Thanks Bogie, then my problem is most likely an issue caused by dubbing VHS stock footage “viewers” to DV without reference. Glad its not a new issue within FCP.

Try rendering the timeline before exporting, and make certain that all options are selected, including “Full.”

Are you talking about exporting still frames, sequencial frames, or a QT using the JPEG codec?

Your solution is not great by any stretch. Today’s SATA solutions are so cheap, so reliable and offer so much flexibility that it pains me to see you investing the time and money to dink around with makeshift solutions using old drives just because they were once expensive.
Brand new 300gb enterprise level SATA drives are $118 at https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144032. With an inexpenive SATA raid enclosure (see Firmtek.com) you could be running drives that are like 4x faster than your previous drives and swapping the drives out between jobs and bewteen rooms at will, and all for very little dough.
