Thanks charlie. It sound like you’re speaking of a clip by clip basis. I’m basically taking a long 3-4 hour multi cam sequence (project) and extracting what I dont like, leaving the selects there. You seem to be describing the process the other way around, but the problem is, I really have to make my selections based on what I’m cutting out more than what I’m leaving. So I guess the short answer is there is no persistent i/o in a project. Kinda baffling why the whole range selection was created. I’ve been using X for 6 months straight now, and I’ve seen no upside to it thus far.
Do you know offhand if there is a “mark to markers” command like in 7? That would essentially function as i/o’s for me in a project.

That being said, if a mixdown master can happen in the bg, that would still make it usable for me, and opens up more possibility of Ditching X for this kind of work.

I also wonder if anything was axed to make the package cheaper like Avid FX. MC 5 came with Boris CC and that was axed in 6. Avid FX is the only secondary color grading solution available. I would’ve like have seen updated color controls and a multi-cam solution for start/stop camera that doesn’t involve Reality TV style multi-grouping. Of course if a ref file could be imported via AMA that would fix that problem.

I just took the test last saturday. You do not need to take a class. You do have to take the test from an authorized avid test center, and they will charge you around $150 to take the test. Its free if you pay for the cla$$ though.
There are 2 books that cover the User cert and two additional that cover the pro cert. You can take either or.

Agreed. I remember having to cut a show on 7 after having spent the last year cutting exclusively on MC and thinking how cumbersome the track selection was. Of course all the time I spent cutting on 7 before Avid I never noticed.
My hope is that PP develops closer to the Avid timeline and not to 7s.

Avid has a toggled auto-patch function that makes it much less work to patch than FCP 7. Without the auto-patch enabled though, I can see how this would start to be a chore. Guess I’ll have to get used to it and cross my fingers that the complaints got through for the next installment of PP.

I was thinking the same thing regarding the video being for 5.5 but it seems most of the functions are still the same. Anyone know any differently?

Thanks Bob! How funny, the “biggest gotcha” is standard track selection form in Avid, so what drives Walter “batty” is exactly what I’ve come to expect.

I’ve been having the same trouble with h.264. I did a test last week as another attempt to solve the problem and found that clips longer than 10 minutes always gave an error, yet I could transcodea large number of smaller clips.
They all should eventually transcode but for longer clips, they have to be babysat. and you shouldn’t transcode more than 3 long clips at a time.
