I think I’ve cracked it. I googled ‘launch media encoder without plugins mac’ and found this thread. Mind you, it’s based on 10.15 Catalina and I’m on 10.13 High Sierra.

However, I did a test with MediaEncoder 2020 and lo and behold, ME 2020 launched without problems. Then I tried to launch AE 2020 and it did. And recognizes my video card as well. Same goes for AE 2019. I did a very small test render with AE 2020 and it worked without problems but I still have to test further.

It makes me conclude that ME and AE are using this folder: MacHD > Library > Application Support > Adobe > Common > Plug-ins > 7.0 > MediaCore. If there’s anything in it that they don’t like, AE and ME will crash.

Update: after uninstalling ME 2020, 2019 and 2018, versions 2018 and 2019 are not showing up in my Adobe panel, although I have the option ‘show older apps’ switched on. ME 2020 still crashes.

The AE versions 2020, 2019 and 2018 didn’t create prefs I found out when I looked for them.

Thanks. I’ve tried that. On closer look, could it be related to Media Encoder? It’s around the initialisation of ME (in the AE launch) that AE crashes. I’ll try to uninstall ME + prefs and see what happens.

Thanks Emre. I got it sorted. I ended up with using masks as I could lock those to work on overlapping ones (couldn’t find a way to lock paths in shape layers). I worked with extra obscuring masks to overcome the problem with letters having more or less paths than the new letters. Playing with the vertex points also helped. For the purpose it works but I agree that when using morphing the requirements are pretty strict to get a good morph.

Tanks Walter. I was already testing with overlapping masks but I’m also faced with a intersecting mask. That means 1 mask – after morphing – falls partially outside the new letter. So, I have to obscure that one with 2 maks. It’s a challenge to get that right. I’m working with shape layers as these should give little more options than plain masks I thought.

Thanks John! Yes, the particles are all stills so I think I can use your solution.

Thanks Todd. I was in such a hurry that I had to solve it with ordinary keyframes. Not as smooth of course. I wil look into your solution now. Much appreciated.

Thanks Craig. Yes, I’m working with Episode 5.2. The H-264 clip’s audio does not have AAC, just normal/ big endian @ 48000Khz. I’ll ask for a lossless version @ 44.100Khz. Should that do the trick? Because the other H-264 clips I worked with did not cause any problems.
