I assume that most motion pictures are now shot in 4K resolution since there seems to be a transition from film to digital. Regardless of the digital format to me film has a certain personality to it. Digital seems cold, distant and too sterile for me. Something about the scratches, dirt and dust on film that gives it a personality. Plus the color and grain adds something to it. I guess I am just old fashioned but analog seems to have a certain warmth to it.

  • Alright, so X is not perfect. Neither is any other NLE on the market. We are human. No matter how much your NLE of choice is improved it will never be “perfect”, that is how I see it.

I will say in many aspects X has made much progress. Yes, it would be nice to have a “Send To Motion” command but it does not. I would not consider it a complaint but rather an area where Apple can make an improvement.

The same goes for the color bar. It is certainly, at least some degree, more intuitive then the color wheel. The lack of individual sliders should also be addressed. Then again no NLE is going to have the best set of tools for color correction. I rely on Resolve for that task and color grading as needed. This is not to say the tools are bad in Final Cut Pro X, they need some improvement.

One thing to remember is that even though an NLE may lack in certain areas it makes up for it in others. Perhaps we demand to much out of our NLE of choice, not paying attention to its strong points, how it makes our workflow easier. I find that trying to working with it rather than against it makes me a more efficient editor.

That is my opinion and those are my thoughts. I think it really comes down to which tool is most appropriate.

  • [Mark Dobson] “Why don’t you just download the free one month trial and see what you think. I also loved FCP7 but wouldn’t dream of going back to it now, as they say – I’ve moved on.”

Did just that. I am still adjusting to X and at times I want a timeline with tracks. Moving stuff around in X can be frustrating at times. In other areas I find myself liking the new version more. This is just me and everyone is different. Glad I went with the 30 day trial period and watched some Youtube videos. It saved me from going to the nut house.

[Tim Wilson] “Maybe even more fun?”

Zing! Love creating a lower third title in Motion for use inside of X which is a huge time saver. Besides it is fun, which is most important.

I really don’t miss Premiere Pro that much now. At least with X you get a great value and there is no drain my wallet every month plan to deal with. I mean subscription model. 🙂

[Darren Roark] “It’s the only major advantage CS/CC users still have and it’s easier to get an FCP X project in to AE than Motion.”

What is the best way to do this? I remember that there is some application that will handle the task but don’t know what the name of it is. Very interested in it.

Excellent post! I find many things much faster, not to mention easier in the current version. I love the amount of effects packed in here which can save money. Yes, there are some plug-ins that do come in handy but the current version has a nice set.

My only real complaint at the moment is that you can not keyframe color correction which is sometimes necessary. That and the lack of “Send To Motion” command. In reality these complaints are minor in nature. I use Resolve should color correction get complex.

The only thing about Motion is the lack of a parent feature and no expressions. Sure parameters are useful but expressions are much more powerful, not to mention flexible. Then again for the price Motion is a very solid piece of software and really comes in useful. Being able to create a title, lower third or effect saves a huge amount of time.

I find the new project management to be top notch. Bins and stuff would be nice but the current version, at least in my opinion, really has better tools to organize your projects.

Thank you Robin and Simon for taking the time to answer my question. I find that doing some work inside of Photoshop is easier and allows for some more flexibility. I will use Motion for the text as changes will often be necessary. Thank you again for answering my questions.

I can not believe how far the computer world has evolved since the original Macintosh big box model. Thank you for posting this.

[Charlie Austin] “FCS 3 is still readily available if you need it. ;-)”

It is for me. Have it sitting on a shelf right now but X is really starting to grow on me. I am even getting along with the magnetic timeline now! I kind of miss tracks but that is becoming less of an issue.
