[Rich Rubasch] “But I doubt it is $399 with no additional subscription cost ever.”

Just went through the FAQ section. The lifetime plan is $399 USD and a one-time fee. To me that suggests you make only one payment and that is it with no fees down the road. I think the fee schedule is fair and very reasonable. Just downloaded the beta version today, so far it is smooth sailing. Very easy and quick to install. I had only had one minor issue but that was operator error.

[Charlie Austin] “Why not? They still sell their individual packages, I’d guess they’ll just add stuff to the premium accounts. Hell, even Apple seems to be going this route. I’ve only bought FCP X, Compressor, Motion once. All the major updates have been free (so far…)”

Hey! Please do not tell Apple this or they will hit us with a monthly fee. 🙂

I think that Genarts has a similar program.

[Shawn Miller] ” I think Adobe could learn something here. :-)”

Zing! Kudos to Red Giant for doing something like this. More frequent updates will be worth the price of admission. Hoping that more of our favorite tools will be made available in the Apple family of products, including Particular, the most awesome particle system out there. I will join in and look forward. This has to be the biggest update since the toaster.

You just beat me to the punch. This looks promising. In relation to this Rampant Design Tools has come out with products for 2k, 4K and above. Noticed that on HD products, the prices have been reduced. This is very exciting news!

[Scott Witthaus] “I also think the user-base of MC would howl bloody murder with a “radical” change like that. Remember the Smart Tool? I was a beta-tester on that one, and you would have thought the sky had fallen.”

Resistance is futile! Evil laugh included at no extra cost! 🙂

Interesting that you bring this up. Part of me does like the timeline but the other part does not. Tracks are better, just my opinion.

Now that I am off that tangent, any editing software would greatly benefit from how Final Cut Pro does organize clips. The last major update was a huge improvement. Avid is a bit clunky when it comes to importing clips into a project. I have not used the latest and greatest version of Premiere Pro since it is subscription only. I will say it is easier to import clips in there.

One thing that Apple should bring back is storyboard editing. With the previous version, one could arrange clips in a certain order, drag them over to the canvas and easily make a rough cut within a few seconds. Premiere does the same thing but it is called something else. Not sure about Avid having this feature.

On another subject, but one that is related: Adobe should look at adding a group like feature much like Motion has. I know that pre-comps are often necessary but having to switch between comps to make a change then back over is not exactly efficient. Easy to do but efficient it is not. Motion could likewise benefit from having the ability to parent layers, have a null object and expressions. Then again, editors are the target audience.

I think they should bring back tracks but that is very unlikely to even take place.

Also, make it a subscription only model! 🙂

[Sam Comer] “A dedicated Roll Edit tool. I’m really not fond of the Trim tool that changes between ripple, roll, and selection depending on where your cursor happens to be in on the clip. If I want to roll, I want a roll tool. Simple.”

The trim tool does need to be improved. It is a bit clumsy and confusing at first. In earlier versions you simply pressed the “R” key to toggle between ripple and roll. A much better way.

Also, a 4 up display would come in handy for slip and slide edits. I would like to know what is going on either side of the clip. Avid probably has the best trim tools available.

Just a few simple adjustments under the hood can make for some big improvements. New features are nice but improvements are much better.
