What Avid system are you working on? I can’t get this deck (BR-DV3000U) to do a digital cut for me. It cues up at the pre-roll point and then says “can’t find coincident point on tape, or this tape is write-protected.”

    My system:

Avid Media Composer v. 10.6.0 (Meridien)
    Power Mac G4, 933 MHz
    Mac OS 9.2.2
    1 GB RAM
    ATTO UL3D SCSI card
    Avid rS MediaDrives

I don’t get why it would be better if digitized as 1:1. I understand that it might make a difference to capture via SDI in 1:1 if the source were DV25, it having 4:1:1 color sampling. But DV50 has 4:2:2 color sampling. What differenece would the effects house see if digitized in DV50p as opposed to 1:1? Does it have to do with the Avid codec specs/algorithms? If so, why are they calling the codec “DV50p” if it isn’t actually up to the DV50 spec?

  • I think I’ve heard of this problem from someone else. Try to import just one bwf into the 24fps project. does that work? then import the rest as a group of files.

I remember someone having a similar problem, and the solution was to import a single file first, and then import a group of files. For whatever reason, importing a group of flies right off the bat was giving them problems.

    hope that helps.

On Wikipedia they talk about FSD in regards to digital audio. But the place on the Io Control Panel that I see this setting is in the area called “Analog Audio Level”. Does that mean that you can set the analog output level to be the equivalent of a digital audio setting with 18 dBu of head room or 24 dBu of head room? Does that make sense?

What is the difference between dBu and dB?

How about an Io LA. Maybe I could sell the Io and get an Io LA. Can an Io LA and a KONA2 work on the same system? Does anyone have any real world experience with this?

    Barry,

    thanks for the informative response.

With the Varicam, does it also record to tape in 59.94 progressive frames/sec with these frame rates and do a similar flagging:

    23.98p
    24p
    29.97p
    30p
    60i
    60p

Are these considered “variable frame rates” or are those more like 4fps, 8fps, 15fps, 48 fps.?

What about when recording 1080? Does the varicam has variable frame rates for 1080?

What about backing up data to DV tape:

    https://coolatoola.com/FAQ.htm

This is not in the DV codec. Any data can be transferred to DV tape via firewire with this software, and it claims to have metadata tracking methods so you can zero in on the data you want to restore. Haven’t used it, but saw a post about it on another forum.

Is anyone using this software? Seems like a breakthrough product, but I hadn’t heard of it until last night, so I can’t say for sure.
