We have been running this configuration just fine!
The only problems that I have heard about were a few random instances of drives in raids not mounting upon boot,
which were cleared up by changing out SATA cables. -
I use a Sonnet Tempo SATA 4+4 PCI card in my dual 2.0 G5,
With a Swift Data 200 internal drive mount kit,
and an external MacGurus Burly 4 drive SATA enclosure.
Aside from my internal boot drive, I have 4 internal, and 4 external, for a total of 8 Maxtor 300GB drives.
The 4 external drives are set raid 0 which is very fast,
and used for uncompressed 10bit video editing, as well as high track count audio sessions in DP.
Internally, I have the drives set as singles, where I use 1 for dedicated sample library storage and playback, 1 for dedicated sound effects and music library storage, 1 as a recording drive for ProTools, which does not like software raids, and 1 drive as a backup. -
Like Frank said, It’s a tough nut to crack.
In my neck of the woods, the local cable company will produce a turnkey ad for $300.00.
And the top rated TV station in the market will produce for free with an air buy.As far as VO work is concerned, I think union talent like AFTRA are probably out of your budget.
I do voice work nationally, as a non-union freelancer and my rates vary depending on market size.
For example, my talent fee for a small market TV one year use is only $125.00,
while top market TV one year use is $1000.00.
And on top of the talent fee, there is studio time involved at $100.00 an hour.I would think that it would be tough to try and eek out a living trying to under cut the local cable company’s rates,

If you are using FCP to edit with, and are wanting to do sound design work for your video projects,
you should be aware that using ProTools LE will require you to buy extra software “Digitranslater” at $449.00 to be able to import OMF files from FCP.
And for complete timecode and video support like ProTools used to have out of the box before they started raping their customers,
it will cost you an extra $995.00 for DV Toolkit software.
If 5.1 is a priority for you, also be aware that ProTools LE does not support surround sound.
And from what I’ve heard, at this time there is a bug in Logic that prevents the proper use of OMF imports.
I’m not a Reason user, but as far as I know Reason does not support OMF file import,
or lock to video unless you use it through ReWire in another app.We still use Satan, oops, I mean ProTools, for down and dirty Radio spots because of it’s ease of use.
But for composition work, sound design, ADR, surround sound and such,
we use MOTU’s Digital Performer.
For instrumentation we have many plugins that we use depending on the sound we are after,
from Spectrasonics Atmosphere to reFX’s Vanguard and everything in between.
We also use plugin samplers like Kontakt and Mach 5 with a huge library of orchestral sounds.Programs like Digital Performer are very powerful, but are also on the complicated side,
and require a little higher learning curve.Good Luck with your quest!

Sorry, any of the monitors I would recommend would put you well over budget with just one speaker.
If your looking to spend under $300.00, you might try one of the many surround pkgs available at places like Comp USA or Best Buy.

Sounds like you have everything needed to complete this project already.
If it were me I’d just use what you have,
and pocket the income rather than blowing it all on new gear.It’s amazing and sometimes disappointing how now that I am a business owner
I must justify equipment purchases. -
Try going to Menu/VCR set up/Audio 1 in/ and then select “Line”
Then on the side of the camera, switch Audio 1/Miic Rec Level to Manual,
and adjust the level as needed.
