As with most things in AE, there are many ways to do that. One way is to put a mask on the shape (by going to layer > new mask) and key framing the mask expansion in the timeline.
By the way, this is a question that is more appropriate for the AE Basics forum.

Your settings seem fine so, more likely than not your, MOV is fine too, but your computer just isn’t fast enough to play back the whole file smoothly. You could play it at half size in QT to confirm that, and if you burn it to DVD, the DVD will probably play fine. If it doesn’t, there may be some other issue going on with your AE comp that will require more info (frame rate, etc.) To address the issue of your computer not being able to play the MOV fully, you could make sure ll other apps are closed to dedicate more resources, add more RAM, etc.

Based on a response I got in the main FC forum, I think I need to clarify my question …
I’m aware of the various long ways to compare an original clip and its altered version, but I was referring to the simple way …
There is a combination of 2-3 keys that, when pressed while a clip is selected in the timeline, temporarily shows that clip in its original form in the viewer without the need to remove or turn off the applied effects individually. This keyboard combination is apparently not commonly known since I originally found it in an obscure Final Cut article 3-4 years ago, its not listed in any of the normal FCP keyboard shortcut lists and none of the Final Cut users I’ve talked to knew about it. Knowing that, you would think I would’ve written it down somewhere, but I didn’t since I didn’t think I’d ever forget it.
I suppose I could just keep trying various key combos until I find it, but I’m afraid I’d start changing all kinds of settings without realizing it and cause real problems for myself that way.

I do what your describing all the time. I think the easiest way to answer the question is to describe the process step-by-step and maybe there will be some detail in the description that will help …
- duplicate art_01.psd on the hard drive & rename it art_02.psd
- put art_01.psd in a ZIP file so AE can’t find it
- open art_02.psd and make changes to existing layers
- create new layers identified with “_N” when changes are drastic
- open AE project & replace first altered layer in project window (keeping an eye on the layer description in the project window to be sure I chose correctly either “layer size” or “doc size”) … AE should find others automatically and everything should be in the right place in your comps
- import “_N” layers and place accordingly
- render and go to lunch (optional ;~)
On occasion, I’ve had some of the issues you described to a minor degree using this process, but I’ve found them to be my error in that I changed a layer in a way that confused AE (i.e., changes to alpha channel), but that was often fixable by reinterpreting the layer in AE. On occasion, I’ve also had to replace each layer one by one, but it was still far better than completely recreating all of my animations.

Are you sure the layers inside the precomp don’t end after a few seconds and that the precomp layer in your main comp isn’t obscured by another 3D layer?

I don’t have PS open right now and I forget the names of similar things amongst different software, but in PS I know it’s in one of the last dropdown menus to the right and its called something like reset workspace.

That’s true … to increase the size, the only thing I can think of, besides using a larger solid, is to apply a distort filter like Corner Pin and basically stretch the layer.

Just add a mask , double click the mask and drag the top border to where you want it … not really “re-sizing”, but sounds like what you want to accomplish.
That is if you don’t wanna change the anchor point which is what it sounds like.

Sounded like the AE mp3 issue at first but since theyre WAVs Id just turn of the time-remapping and re-time the audio in audio software before bringing into AE.
