Ok. I’m new to the world of AE, but VERY excited. So far I’ve been playing around copying tutorials (and thanks you all SOOOO much for the tutorials. Anyway, I’m working on a iMac. 3.06 GHz intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB of Ram (I’m assuming that this will impact your answer to my question, but not sure). Anyway I’m running AE Cs4. Right now, I’m just using footage taken with my built in web cam (while I’m waiting on delivery of a camcorder) to play around with AE.

Here is what my flow looks like, and what is happening.
I record the footage 1024×576 with the icam in Imovie and then output the footage at 960×540 (only option available from imovie) and then importing that .m4v file into AE.

Once in AE I complete the tutorial and then “make movie” with these settings.
    Render Settings: Best Settings
Output Module: Quicktime DV NTSC 48Khz

Once that is done, I end up with an .mov file. When I play that file with quicktime (or VLC) the images freezes and then occasionally the frame is refreshed. The video doesn’t play out smoothly at all. What settings should I be using for rendering. The ultimate end for these videos will be on DVD to watch on my widescreen tv. any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Your settings seem fine so, more likely than not your, MOV is fine too, but your computer just isn’t fast enough to play back the whole file smoothly. You could play it at half size in QT to confirm that, and if you burn it to DVD, the DVD will probably play fine. If it doesn’t, there may be some other issue going on with your AE comp that will require more info (frame rate, etc.) To address the issue of your computer not being able to play the MOV fully, you could make sure ll other apps are closed to dedicate more resources, add more RAM, etc.

Thanks! I appreciate the quick response. I’m going to play with the settings a bit more but I’m optimistic.
